Der von Kathrina Talmi herausgegebene Band enthält praxisbezogene Essays von drei Autoren des Sprachanalytischen Forums: von Kai Pege über philosophische Essays, von Kathrina Talmi über wirtschaftliches Verhalten und von Reinhard Matern über den aktuellen Stand im Konflikt mit dem Nahen Osten. Im Zentrum des Bandes stehen sozialphilosophische Themen, die aus analytischer Sicht behandelt werden. Kai Pege kritisiert die anhaltende Verschulung, Formalisierung und Erstarrung, die von universitärer Seite aus betrieben wird und prüft, welche Kriterien tatsächlich erforderlich sind, (...) um ein Abfassen von philosophisch wissenschaftlichen Essays gewährleisten zu können. Reinhard Matern nimmt Huntingtons Wendung hin zu einer politikwissenschaftlichen Zivilisationstheorie auf und prüft in der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Nahen Osten, inwieweit der Ansatz geschichtsphilosophisch brauchbar ist. Im Zentrum des Bandes stehen aber wirtschaftliche Fragen, die von Kathrina Talmi aufgeworfen werden: In drei Essays, wobei einer für den Band titelgebend war, wird aus einer Verhaltensperspektive philosophisch auf die Wirtschaft eingegangen, auch auf relativ neue Ereignisse im Zusammenhang mit digitalen Produkten. Die Autorin klärt in ihrem philosophischen Essay darüber auf, was Natur aus naturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive ausmacht und stellt in diesem Kontext die Frage nach der menschlichen Stellung in der abstrakt gefassten Natur. Doch mehr als ein Zweig der irdischen Fauna bleibt den Menschen nicht, resümiert die Autorin, allenfalls in ihren emotional überheblichen Einbildungen.

Der Titel des Bandes greift eine Frage auf, die im alltäglichen Umgang aufkam: die Frage nach analytischer Philosophie, vom Rücksitz eines Autos gestellt. Dieser Kontext bot den Anlass, eine Herangehensweise zu wählen, die bislang nicht üblich war: auszuprobieren, was eine Einbeziehung des Alltags und Umgangs erbringen könnte, ohne auf Komplexität zu verzichten. -/- Diese Öffnung hat zu überraschenden Ergebnissen geführt, die eine Weiterentwicklung der analytischen Philosophie erlauben, auch und in besonderer Weise theoretisch: Die Beachtung von umgangsprachlichem Verhalten kann dabei behilflich (...) sein, Sprache besser zu verstehen, als dies eine traditionelle wissenschaftsphilosophische Ausrichtung ermöglichen würde. -/- Die Beiträge zu diesem Band haben Kathrina Talmi, Reinhard Matern und Kai Pege eingebracht. A theory of cognitive systems individuation is presented and defended. The approach has some affinity with Leonard Talmy's Overlapping Systems Model of Cognitive Organization, and the paper's first section explores aspects of Talmy's view that are shared by the view developed herein. According to the view on offer -- the conditional probability of co-contribution account (CPC) -- a cognitive system is a collection of mechanisms that contribute, in overlapping subsets, to a wide variety of forms of intelligent behavior. Central to (...) this approach is the idea of an integrated system. A formal characterization of integration is laid out in the form of a conditional-probabilitybased measure of the clustering of causal contributors to the production of intelligent behavior. I relate the view to the debate over extended and embodied cognition and respond to objections that have been raised in print by Andy Clark, Colin Klein, and Felipe de Brigard. (shrink)

The paper uses the tools of mereotopology (the theory of parts, wholes and boundaries) to work out the implications of certain analogies between the 'ecological psychology' of J. J Gibson and the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl. It presents an ontological theory of spatial boundaries and of spatially extended entities. By reference to examples from the geographical sphere it is shown that both boundaries and extended entities fall into two broad categories: those which exist independently of our cognitive acts (for example, (...) the planet Earth, its exterior surface); and those which exist only in virtue of such acts (for example: the equator, the North Sea). The visual field, too, can be conceived as an example of an extended entity that is dependent in the sense at issue. The paper suggests extending this analogy by postulating entities which would stand to true judgments as the visual field stands to acts of visual perception. The judgment field is defined more precisely as that complex extended entity which comprehends all entities which are relevant to the truth of a given (true) judgment. The work of cognitive linguists such as Talmy and Langacker, when properly interpreted, can be shown to yield a detailed account of the structures of the judgment fields corresponding to sentences of different sorts. A new sort of correspondence-theoretic definition of truth for sentences of natural language can then be formulated on this basis. (shrink)

La présente étude utilise les outils du domaine de la méréotopologie (la théorie des parts, ensembles et frontières) pour élaborer les implications de certaines analogies entre la 'psychologie écologique' de J.J.Gibson et la phénoménologie de Edmund Husserl. On présentera une théorie ontologique de frontières spatiales et des entités possédant une extension spatiale. S'en rapportant aux exemples de la sphère de géographie, on démontre qu'aussi bien les frontières que les entités à extension spatiale appartiennent à deux vastes catégories: des objets qui (...) existent indépendamment de nos actes cognitifs (par exemple: la planète Terre, sa surface extérieure); et des objets qui existent seulement grâce à ces actes (par exemple: l'équateur, la Mer du Nord). Le champ visuel, lui aussi, peut être conçu comme un exemple d'une entité à extension spatiale qui est dépendante dans le sens proposé ci-dessus. L'étude présente suggère une extension de cette analogie en postulant les entités qui, pour les vrais jugements, seraient ce que le champ visuel est pour les actes de perception visuelle. Le champ de jugement est défini plus précisément comme une entité étendue complexe, contenant toutes les entités essentielles pour la vérité d'un (vrai) jugement donné. Il est possible de démontrer que le travail des linguistes cognitifs tel Talmy ou Langacker, si l'on l'interprète convenablement, produit une explication détaillée des structures des champs de jugement correspondant aux phrases de sortes différentes. Un genre nouveau de définition de la vérité en tant que correspondance pour les expressions de la langue naturelle peut donc être formulé sur cette base. (shrink)

How people understand the fundamental dynamics of stock and flow (SF) is an important basic theoretical question with many practical applications. Such dynamics can be found, for example, in monitoring one’s own private bank account (income versus expenditures), the state of a birthday party (guests coming versus leaving), or in the context of climate change (CO2 emissions versus absorption). Understanding these dynamics helps in managing everyday life and in controlling behavior in an appropriate way (e.g., stopping expenditures when the balance (...) of a bank account approaches zero). In this paper, we present a universal frame for understanding stock-flow reasoning in terms of the theory of force dynamics. This deep-level analysis is then applied to two different presentation formats of SF tasks in the context of climate change. We can explain why in a coordinate-graphic presentation misunderstandings occur (so called “SF failure”), whereas in a verbal presentation a better understanding is found. We end up with recommendations for presentation formats that we predict will help people to better understand SF dynamics. Better public SF understanding might in turn also enhance corresponding public action – such as enhancing pro-environmental actions in relation to climate change. (shrink)
