  • Why human germline genome editing is incompatible with equality in an inclusive society.Calum MacKellar - 2021 - The New Bioethics 27 (1):19-29.
Human germline genome editing is increasingly being seen as acceptable provided certain conditions are satisfied. Accordingly, genetic modifications would take place on eggs or sperm (or their prec...

  • La función ideológica del transhumanismo y algunos de sus presupuestos.Antonio Diéguez - 2020 - Isegoría 63:367-386.
We must undoubtedly take advantage of the benefits brought by new technologies, and we must apply them to the human being to the extent that a prolonged and serene reflection tells us that this application brings improvements in a full sense. But that does not mean that we should accept the ideological discourse of transhumanism. This discourse owes much of its power of conviction to certain philosophical assumptions that have not been sufficiently clarified and discussed. This article aims to highlight (...)

  • Human Dignity and Gene Editing: Additional Support for Raposo’s Arguments.Iñigo de Miguel Beriain & Begoña Sanz - 2020 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 17 (2):165-168.
The aim of the present paper is to reinforce some of the affirmations made by Vera Lucia Raposo in a recent paper published by the Journal of Bioethical Inquiry. According to her, germline gene editing does not violate human dignity at all. This article offers some complementary ideas supporting her statement. In particular, four main arguments are stressed. Firstly, not only is the idea of human dignity unclear, but the idea of the human genome suffers from a general lack of (...)

  • The Better I Can Be: In Defence of Human Enhancement for a New Genetic Equality.Vera Lúcia Carapeto Raposo - 2022 - Canadian Journal of Bioethics / Revue canadienne de bioéthique 5 (2).
The main objection to genetic enhancement is that it will create a “genetic apartheid,” deepening existing inequalities. This paper offers considerations that can weaken the inequality argument against genetic enhancement. First, I question the dichotomy of treatment versus enhancement since the differences between the two are unclear. Second, I argue that human enhancement is part of human nature and that there is no sound reason to accept it in other domains while rejecting it in genetics. The paper also demonstrates that (...)
