  1. Substantiating Nexus Between Consumption Values and Sustainable Consumption Behavior: A Way Toward Sustainable Business.Jianmin Sun, Huma Safdar, Zain ul Abidin Jaffri, Syed Ibn-ul-Hassan & Ilknur Ozturk - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13:908391.
The unprecedented economic growth in recent decades has cultivated the exploitation of natural resources and over-consumption, leading to ecological deterioration and sustainability. The ever-increasing consumption in developing countries is creating a significant environmental strain. Thus, the industry and consumers’ environmental issues and their harmful effects on human health have led to concerns among researchers, scientists, academic communities, and policymakers. The present work examines the impact of different consumption value factors on sustainable consumption behavior concerning consumer choice in Pakistan and China. (...)

  • The Problem of Energy.John Urry - 2014 - Theory, Culture and Society 31 (5):3-20.
Energy forms and their extensive scale are remarkably significant for the ways that societies are organized. This article shows the importance of how societies are ‘energized’ and especially the global growth of ‘fossil fuel societies’. Much social thought remains oblivious to the energy revolution realized over the past two to three centuries which set the ‘West’ onto a distinct trajectory. Energy is troubling for social thought because different energy systems with their ‘lock-ins’ are not subject to simple human intervention and (...)

  • Understanding Value Change in the Energy Transition: Exploring the Perspective of Original Institutional Economics.Eefje Cuppen, Udo Pesch & Aad Correljé - 2022 - Science and Engineering Ethics 28 (6):1-20.
In this paper, we take inspiration from original institutional economics (OIE) as an approach to study value change within the highly complex assembly of sociotechnical transformations that make up the energy transition. OIE is examined here as a suitable perspective, as it combines Dewey’s pragmatist philosophy and a methodological interactionist perspective on value change, behavior and institutions, with technology figuring as a transformational factor. This combination overcomes conceptual and methodological shortcomings of alternative accounts of values. We will present the contours (...)

  • Electricity as (Big) Data: Metering, spatiotemporal granularity and value.Gordon Walker & Mette Kragh-Furbo - 2018 - Big Data and Society 5 (1).
Electricity is hidden within wires and networks only revealing its quantity and flow when metered. The making of its properties into data is therefore particularly important to the relations that are formed around electricity as a produced and managed phenomenon. We propose approaching all metering as a situated activity, a form of quantification work in which data is made and becomes mobile in particular spatial and temporal terms, enabling its entry into data infrastructures and schemes of evaluation and value production. (...)

  • The Indispensability of Reflexivity to Practice: The Case of Home Energy Efficiency.Oliver Bonnington - 2015 - Journal of Critical Realism 14 (5):461-484.
This article offers new theoretical and empirical insights into decision-making with regard to the domestication and incorporation of home energy efficiency artefacts. These items, such as insulation and heating systems, are currently of high social, political and environmental importance. Researchers investigating energy consumption and related topics have recently turned to theories of practice — especially that proposed by Shove and colleagues — which treat humans as ‘carriers’. In contrast, this article uses realist social theory to afford a pivotal role to (...)

  • Un Estudio exploratorio sobre aspectos éticos en un proyecto de investigación sobre energías renovables.Fausto Javier Sainz Salces - 2022 - Dilemata 37:1-16.
This article presents an approach to understanding ethical issues in renewable energy innovation actions among participants of a research program on a small island. Issues related to citizen participation in the research activities carried out within the framework of the energy transition are explored directly with the participants through interviews carried out at the beginning of the research project. All island participants in the project expressed their opinions about the communication in the project, the implications of participation, the responsibilities as (...)
