The consequentialist needs a value theory, a theory of the epistemic good. The standard theory treats accuracy as the fundamental epistemic good and assumes that it is a good that calls for promotion. Both claims are mistaken. Thus, what makes position-to-know-ascriptions true is just a special case of what makes ability-ascriptions true: compossibility.     I argue that fallibilism, single-premise epistemic closure, and one formulation of the “knowledge-action principle” are inconsistent. I will consider a possible way to avoid this incompatibility, by advocating a pragmatic constraint on belief in general, rather than just knowledge. In this paper, I argue that there is no fixed principle of method-individuation that can stand up to scrutiny.
