This book is the first in English to set out the theoretical underpinnings of modern Socratic Dialogue as a self-directed learning process. Central to the Socratic Method are the opportunities it gives educators and others to * learn about the Socratic Method as a new approach to their work * foster rational critical thinking skills * develop the learners' autonomy * nurture emotional intelligence and qualities such as empathy As a process of philosophising in groups, Socratic Dialogue is attracting growing (...) interest in the US, Mexico and Europe because of its potential contribution to developing learning. Inspired by the philosophy of Socrates, the German philosopher Leonard Nelson began to apply the Socratic Method to thinking and learning in the 1920s. By the 1950s Socratic Dialogue was being developed into a learning/teaching process, initially in Germany. Part 1 of the book deals with theoretical aspects of Socratic Dialogue and suggests possible applications, particularly in the school sector. Part 2 presents a range of Socratic Dialogue experiences in Britain and Germany and offers guidance about the organisation, rules and phases of the Socratic process. The foundation text by Leonard Nelson makes up Part 3. There is information about organizations involved with the promotion of Socratic Dialogue in Britain, Germany and the Netherlands and a survey of relevant literature. The work will be of interest to all those working in education, especially teachers of philosophy, ethics, religious studies and mathematics. The paper brings a critique of Freire’s notions in regard to education, philosophy, and politics. It explains how exploitation and oppression affect humanization. It also criticizes the “Banking model” of education and recommends the dialogical approach which can transform individuals.

I claim that a genealogy of the philological racism known as ‘orientalism’ should include Leibniz as a founding figure. This argument is framed and motivated by recent publications that seek to exclude Leibniz from the history of race and racism by arguing that he insists on a linguistic, rather than ‘racial,’ schematic of human diversity. A survey of nineteenth-century race theory reveals that this distinction is not only specious, but these recent defenses only further implicate Leibniz in the linguistic tradition (...) that is orientalist racism. Summary In some very interesting recent work, Peter Fenves has sought to trace G. W. Leibniz's views on human diversity back to the philosopher's core philosophical concerns, in particular to his metaphysical picture of the world as consisting in causally unconnected substances, monads, that are ‘windowless’, ‘worlds apart’. In this article I argue by contrast that Leibniz's anthropological views develop quite independently of his core metaphysics, and are rooted instead in his significant work as a historian and genealogist. In this (...) connection, he develops a conception of race as a ‘series of generations’, and of genealogy as ‘the explication of this series’, that will in turn ground much of his thought about not just human groups, but about living kinds in general. These conceptions, moreover, offer significant new insight into Leibniz's position with respect to the philosophical problem of the ontological status of species. (shrink)

Speech Genres and Other Late Essays presents six short works from Bakhtin's Esthetics of Creative Discourse, published in Moscow in 1979. This is the last of Bakhtin's extant manuscripts published in the Soviet Union. This dissertation focuses on the problem of novelty as seen from the perspective of two French philosophers: Paul Ricoeur and Gilles Deleuze. As such, a new interpretation of the works of these two philosophers is developed. I argue that two models can be derived from their works: a model that strives to make tensions productive (based on Ricoeur) and a model that aims to organize encounters between bodies (taken from Deleuze). These models are developed on their own terms without superimposing (...) one over the other. Hence, the first part of the dissertation focuses on Ricoeur, the second on Deleuze. Through an extensive reading of Ricoeur’s La métaphore vive, it is shown that the living metaphor creates a productive tension in which two previously distinct domains are drawn together. This results in a semantic innovation that first appears as an image and only later can be conceptualized. This argument is further developed by analyzing Augustine’s notion ‘time is a distention of the mind (distentio animi)’ as an example of how a living metaphor introduces a new language that re-describes reality. This example prepares the way for broadening the model of productive tensions by showing how, from Ricoeur’s perspective, the innovative potential of actions can be understood in terms of a productive tension between two orders of imagination. In contrast to Ricoeur, Deleuze’s conception of novelty is not analyzed in terms of a productive tension between two heterogeneous domains, but in terms of an encounter between bodies in which a creative coupling or an affective relation emerges that links these bodies together in a common trajectory. On the basis of a reading of Deleuze’s essays on literature, it is shown how such an encounter can give rise to a single process of metamorphosis. This process can be divided in two closely connected moments: a mutual metamorphosis that sets the whole process in motion and a continuous metamorphosis of proliferating series that keeps it alive. This first, intuitive understanding of the model is deepened by linking it to a metamorphic ontology of expression that is derived from Deleuze’s works on Spinoza. This provides the model with a more rigorous vocabulary and also shows in how these encounters can be organized in such a way that they create the conditions for novelty in three forms of thinking: science, art, and philosophy.
