It is often claimed that the beginnings of Brentano’s ontology were Aristotelian in nature; but this claim is only partially true. Certainly the young Brentano adopted many elements of Aristotle’s metaphysics, and he was deeply influenced by the Aristotelian way of doing philosophy. But he always interpreted Aristotle’s ideas in his own fashion. He accepted them selectively, and he used them in the service of ends that would not have been welcomed by Aristotle himself. From the point of view of Husserl's critique of empiricist theories of abstraction in the Logical Investigations, it seems that Brentano and most of his students would have endorsed the presupposition of Locke's theory of abstraction, which Husserl labels as the 'psychological hypostatization of the general'. For Husserl himself, but also for most of his followers, the motivation behind this critique is that the descriptive psychology of the school of Brentano leads to psychologism if one doesn't accept Platonic ideal objects. (...) In the following article, I argue that Husserl's critique doesn't do justice to the accounts of abstraction developed in the school of Brentano. I take here the particular case of Carl Stumpf, showing that not only does Husserl's accusation miss its target, but also that it attributes indirectly to Stumpf a position that he didn't defend. I suggest that even before the Logical Investigations, Stumpf formulated the basis of an account of abstraction in terms of generalization, an account which will later turn out to be in many ways compatible with Husserl's theory of Spezies in the Logical Investigations, and which provide a viable alternative both to Platonism and to empiricism, thereby calling for a reassessment of the positions on abstraction in the School of Brentano. English summary: This volume reflects on the importance of two Austrian philosophers, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Edmund Husserl, and the Austro-German philosophy they inspired. French text. Les problemes philosophiques que ce dernier a mis au centre de la philosophie analytique sont souvent des problemes nouveaux par rapport aux questions soulevees par les peres de cette tradition, Frege, Moore, Russell et Ramsey. Ils etaient pourtant au centre des (...) traditions, autrichiennes puis austro-allemandes, qui remontent a Bolzano et a Brentano : la psychologie descriptive des eleves de Brentano, la phenomenologie de Husserl et de ses premiers eleves et les differentes ecoles de la psychologie de la Gestalt. Ces problemes appartiennent a la philosophie de l'esprit et du langage : qu'est-ce que vouloir dire quelque chose, vouloir, vouloir faire, eprouver, compter sur une certitude primitive? Y-a-t-il des objets psychologiques ou mentaux prives? Je designet- il? Quel rapport y a-t-il entre le non-sens, la signification et les regles? Entre les regles et les signaux qui nous guident et les symboles qui representent? Les mentalismes, platonismes et essentialismes qui caracterisent souvent la philosophie austro-allemande tranchent avec le rejet systematique de tels ismes chez Wittgenstein. Il est cependant manifeste que ce dernier, comme ses predecesseurs et contemporains austro-allemands, met la description de l'esprit et du langage au coeur de ses reflexions.
