  • Cheating in Academic Institutions: A Decade of Research.Kenneth D. Butterfield, Linda Klebe Trevino & Donald L. McCabe - 2001 - Ethics and Behavior 11 (3):219-232.
This article reviews 1 decade of research on cheating in academic institutions. This research demonstrates that cheating is prevalent and that some forms of cheating have increased dramatically in the last 30 years. This research also suggests that although both individual and contextual factors influence cheating, contextual factors, such as students' perceptions of peers' behavior, are the most powerful influence. In addition, an institution's academic integrity programs and policies, such as honor codes, can have a significant influence on students' behavior. (...)

  • Factors That Explain Academic Dishonesty Among University Students in Thailand.Darrin Thomas - 2017 - Ethics and Behavior 27 (2):140-154.
Academic dishonesty is a problem that continues to plague universities. Few studies have examined how mind-set and individualism contribute to academic dishonesty. Using structural equation modeling, a model was developed to explain academic dishonesty, which included mind-set, individualistic learning environment, individualism, and motivation to study. A total of 207 university students in Thailand participated. The final model explained 30% of the variance in academic dishonesty. All variables in this study had a negative relationship with academic dishonesty, indicating that improvements in (...)

  • Students' Perceptions of Teacher Effectiveness and Academic Misconduct: An Inquiry into the Multivariate Nature of a Complex Phenomenon.Amie R. McKibban - 2013 - Ethics and Behavior 23 (5):378-395.
Using the classroom as the unit of analyses, the current article discusses the methodological issues surrounding the literature with regard to the study of academic misconduct. Arguing for a shift in research, the present empirical investigation assesses the relationship between students' perceptions of classroom environment and academic misconduct by utilizing valid and reliable multidimensional measures with established constructs. By utilizing the classroom as the unit of analysis, a better understanding of the unique variance in academic dishonesty across classes may be (...)

  • Academic Integrity in Higher Education: the Case of a Medium-Size College in the Galilee, Israel.Jonathan Kasler, Meirav Hen & Adi Sharabi-Nov - 2019 - Journal of Academic Ethics 17 (2):151-167.
An important measure of the success of an academic institution is evaluation of its moral health. In order to investigate academic integrity in our institution, we administered the Academic Integrity Survey to a representative sample of 384 students from different departments. In addition we performed content analysis on 24 disciplinary hearing files from the previous academic year in order to ascertain which students were brought before the committee and why. Results show that the majority of students perceived academic misconduct as (...)

  • The Role of Cultural Values in Plagiarism in Higher Education.Nina C. Heckler & David R. Forde - 2015 - Journal of Academic Ethics 13 (1):61-75.
Student plagiarism is a rampant practice and major concern in higher education. How students perceive the overarching American cultural values and their impact on the practice will inform educators and help them to better combat the practice. It is also valuable for educators to know whether the students perceive the practice to be part of the dominant culture, currently, on college campuses. This study reports perceptions of plagiarism by students in an introductory sociology course. Open-ended questions explored perceptions of extent, (...)

  • Why Do College Students Cheat?Mark G. Simkin & Alexander McLeod - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 94 (3):441 - 453.
More is known about the pervasiveness of college cheating than reasons why students cheat. This article reports the results of a study that applied the theory of reasoned action and partial least squares methodology to analyze the responses of 144 students to a survey on cheating behavior. Approximately 60% of the business students and 64% of the non-business students admitted to such behavior. Among cheaters, a "desire to get ahead" was the most important motivating factor - a surprising result given (...)

  • Academic plagiarism: Explanatory factors from students' perspective. [REVIEW]Jaume Sureda-Negre - 2010 - Journal of Academic Ethics 8 (3):217-232.
The study of academic plagiarism among university students is at an embryonic stage in Spain and in the other Spanish-speaking countries. This article reports the results of a research, carried out in a medium-sized Spanish university, based on a double method approach—quantitative and qualitative—concerning the factors associated with academic plagiarism from the students’ perspective. The main explanatory factors of the phenomenon, according to the results obtained, are: a) aspects and behaviour of students (bad time management, personal shortcomings when preparing assignments, (...)

  • Academic Integrity: The Relationship between Individual and Situational Factors on Misconduct Contemplations.Jennifer L. Kisamore, Thomas H. Stone & I. M. Jawahar - 2007 - Journal of Business Ethics 75 (4):381-394.
Recent, well-publicized scandals, involving unethical conduct have rekindled interest in academic misconduct. Prior studies of academic misconduct have focussed exclusively on situational factors (e.g., integrity culture, honor codes), demographic variables or personality constructs. We contend that it is important to also examine how␣these classes of variables interact to influence perceptions of and intentions relating to academic misconduct. In a sample of 217 business students, we examined how integrity culture interacts with Prudence and Adjustment to explain variance in estimated frequency of (...)
