We continue a series of papers on a family of many-valued modal logics, a family whose Kripke semantics involves many-valued accessibility relations. Earlier papers in the series presented a motivation in terms of a multiple-expert semantics. They also proved completeness of sequent calculus formulations for the logics, formulations using a cut rule in an essential way. In this paper a novel cut-free tableau formulation is presented, and its completeness is proved.

Modern modal logic originated as a branch of philosophical logic in which the concepts of necessity and possibility were investigated by means of a pair of dual operators that are added to a propositional or first-order language. The field owes much of its flavor and success to the introduction in the 1950s of the “possible-worlds” semantics in which the modal operators are interpreted via some “accessibility relation” connecting possible worlds. In subsequent years, modal logic has received attention as an attractive (...) approach towards formalizing such diverse notions as time, knowledge, or action. Nowadays, modal logics are applied in various disciplines, ranging from economics to linguistics and computer science. Consequently, there is by now a large variety of modal languages, with an even greater wealth of interpretations. For instance, many applications require a poly-modal framework consisting of a language with a family of modal operators and a semantics in which the corresponding accessibility relations are connected somehow. This book treats modal logic as a theory, with several subtheories, such as completeness theory, correspondence theory, duality theory and transfer theory and is intended as a course in modal logic for students who have had prior contact with modal logic and who wish to study it more deeply. It presupposes training in mathematical or logic. Very little specific knowledge is presupposed, most results which are needed are proved in this book.

In this paper, we contribute to a series of results on the family of many-valued modal logics which as been recently introduced by M. Fitting in [8, 9, 10, 12]. In this family, the underlying propositional logics employ finite Heyting algebras for the space of truth values and the monotonic modal logics correspond to possible-worlds models with many-valued accessibility relations. There exist also modal non-monotonic counterparts in the McDermott & Doyle fashion. In [10], M. Fitting provided a many-valued generalization of (...) Moore's autoepistemic logic and proved that, for logics with linear truth spaces, the important theorem of G. Schwarz for the equivalence of K45 and autoepistemic logic from [31], extends to the many-valued case. Here, we define and investigate a many-valued generalization of Schwarz's reflexive autoepistemic logic from [28] with an intended interpretation of □ as 'true and known'. We prove several interesting properties of many-valued reflexive expansions and show that - under the same linearity restriction - Schwarz's relevant theorem extends also in the many-valued setting, i.e., our many-valued reflexive autoepistemic logic coincides with many-valued non-monotonic Sw5. Each modal language of this family is based on a Heyting algebra, which serves as the space of truth values, and is interpreted on an interesting version of possible-worlds semantics: the modal frames are directed graphs whose edges are labelled with an element of the underlying Heyting algebra. We introduce interesting generalized forms of the classical axioms D, T, B, 4, (...) and 5 and prove that they are canonical for certain algebraic frame properties, which generalize seriality, reflexivity, symmetry, transitivity and euclideanness. Our results are quite general as they hold for any modal language built on a complete Heyting algebra. (shrink)

In [12] the study of Positive Modal Logic is initiated using standard Kripke semantics and the positive modal algebras are introduced. The minimum system of Positive Modal Logic is the -fragment of the local consequence relation defined by the class of all Kripke models. It can be axiomatized by a sequent calculus and extensions of it can be obtained by adding sequents as new axioms. In [6] a new semantics for PML is proposed to overcome some frame incompleteness problems discussed (...) in [12]. The frames of this semantics consists of a set of indexes, a quasi-order on them and an accessibility relation. The models are obtained by using increasing valuations relatively to the quasi-order of the frame. This semantics is coherent with the dual structures obtained by developing the Priestley duality for positive modal algebras, one of the topics or the present paper, and can be seen also as arising from the Kripke semantics for a suitable intuitionistic modal logic. The present paper is devoted to the study of the mentioned duality as well as to proving some d-persistency results as well as a Sahlqist Theorem for sequents and the semantics proposed in [6]. Also a Goldblatt-Thomason theorem that characterizes the elementary classes of frames of that semantics that are definable by sets of sequents is proved. (shrink)
