  1. Образование и философия.Сергей Николаевич Бычков - 2018 - Proceedings of the XXIII World Congress of Philosophy 50:301-306.
Educational problems require philosophical justification, whenever traditional approaches are proved inadequate. This is what actually happens in the process of building the information society. The significant efforts to develop technical skills in science and remember a large amount of data in humanities, learned earlier in school, are not today justified from the point of view of modern education. The computers have released people from the necessity to operate not only with numbers, but also with mathematical symbols. The Internet gives access (...)

  • Multiculturalism as Multimodal Communication: A Semiotic Perspective.Alin Olteanu - 2019 - Springer Verlag.
This highly readable book develops a numanistic, and specifically semiotic approach to multiculturalism. It reveals how semiotics provides fresh and valuable insights into multiculturalism: in contrast to the binary logic of dualistic philosophy, semiotic logic does not understand the value of truth in rigid terms of ‘true’ or ‘false’, ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ only. The value of truth resides in meaning, which is a dynamic, evolutionary phenomenon, rooted, nevertheless, in factuality. Drawing on recent developments in biosemiotics, the book presents a theoretical (...)

This paper gives a fIrst overview over the role of mereology the theory of parts and wholes - in semiotics. The mereology of four major semioticians - Husserl, Jakobson, Hjelmslev, and Peirce is presented briefly and its role in the overall architecture of each of their theories is outlined - with Brentano tradition as reference. Finally, an evaluation of the strength and weaknesses of the four is undertaken, and some guidelines for further research is proposed.

  • Reductionism in Peirce’s sign classifications and its remedy.James Liszka - 2019 - Semiotica 2019 (228):153-172.
Attempts to explain Peirce’s various classifications of signs have been a preoccupation of many Peirce scholars. Opinions are mixed about the sense, coherence, and fruitfulness of Peirce’s various versions, particularly the latter ones. I argue here that it is not a fruitful enterprise, even if sense could be made of them. Although Peirce makes his motivations for the classification of the sciences fairly explicit, it’s hard to find Peirce’s reasons for sign classification. More importantly, I try to make the case (...)

  • Choosing and learning.Kalevi Kull - 2018 - Sign Systems Studies 46 (4):452-466.
We examine the possibility of shifting the concept of choice to the centre of the semiotic theory of learning. Thus, we define sign process (meaning-making) through the concept of choice: semiosis is the process of making choices between simultaneously provided options. We define semiotic learning as leaving traces by choices, while these traces influence further choices. We term such traces of choices memory. Further modification of these traces (constraints) will be called habituation. Organic needs are homeostatic mechanisms coupled with choice-making. (...)

  • Mereology and the Sciences: Parts and Wholes in the Contemporary Scientific Context.Claudio Calosi & Pierluigi Graziani (eds.) - 2014 - Cham: Springer Verlag.
This volume is the first systematic and thorough attempt to investigate the relation and the possible applications of mereology to contemporary science. It gathers contributions from leading scholars in the field and covers a wide range of scientific theories and practices such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, computer science and engineering. Throughout the volume, a variety of foundational issues are investigated both from the formal and the empirical point of view. The first section looks at the topic as it applies (...)
