Ecologically responsible policies are concerned only in part with pollution and resource depletion. There are deeper concerns which touch upon principles of diversity, complexity, autonomy, decentralization, symbiosis, egalitarianism, and classlessness.

  • Political contractarianism.David Gauthier - 1997 - Journal of Political Philosophy 5 (2):132–148.
I want to enquire into the relationship between the normative claims of a society and the normative stances of its members. I shall develop a contractarian perspective, as the only one available to persons who may neither expect nor require their fellows to share their own orientation to values and norms. Although I only touch on these matters here, I hope to contribute to an interpretation of the clauses on the establishment and exercise of religion in the First Amendment to (...)

  • Potentially Every Culture Is All Cultures.Paul Feyerabend - 2019 - Common Knowledge 25 (1-3):13-20.
With a focus on the role of Achilles in the Iliad, this essay argues that it is a mistake to assume that languages and cultures are closed totalities impervious to influence from the outside and from internally driven transformations. If we eliminate that assumption, several others likewise become untenable, including the assumption that precise meanings for words or concepts are available in principle. Objectivism and relativism are claimed to be equally chimerical.

  • Shifting Paradigms: From the Technocratic to the Person-Planetary.Alan R. Drengson - 1980 - Environmental Ethics 2 (3):221-240.
In this paper I examine the interconnections between two paradigms of technology, nature, and social life, and their associated environmental impacts. The dominant technocratic philosophy which now guides policy and technological power is mechanistic. It conceptualizes nature as a resource to be controlled fully for human ends and it threatens drastically to alter the integrity of the planet’s ecosystems. Incontrast, the organic, person-planetary paradigm conceptualizes intrinsic value in all beings. Deep ecology gives priority to community and ecosystem integrity and seeks (...)

  • Wittgenstein, Politics and Human Rights.Robin Holt - 1997 - Routledge.
Do human rights make sense? They have been central to post-war political life, and our picture of moral self. But this is being eroded, Holt argues, and with it the viability of human rights discourse. The pre-social individual and its mental armoury is being challenged by an increasing awareness of genealogical forces in which the self is less a lone claimant than an exponent or rebel. Using Wittgenstein's philosophy, this book considers the liberal position on human rights, along with the (...)
