IN THE winter and spring of 1031,1 was invited to give a series of ten lectures at Harvard University. The subject chosen was the Philosophy of Art; the lectures are the origin of the present volume. The Lectureship was founded in memory of William James and I esteem it a great honor to have this book associated even indirectly with his distinguished name. It is a pleasure, also, te recall, in connection with the lectures, the unvarying kindness and hospitality of (...) my colleagues in the department of philosophy at Harvard. I am somewhat embarrassed in an effort to acknowledge indebtedness to other writers on the subject. Some aspects of it may be inferred from authors mentioned or quoted in the text. I have read on the subject for many years, however, more or less widely in English literature, somewhat less in French and still less in German, and I have absorbed much from sources which I cannot now directly recall. Moreover, my obligations to a number of writers are much greater than might be gathered from allusions to them in the volume itself. My indebtedness to those who have helped me directly can be more easily stated. Dr. Joseph Ratner gave me a number of valuable references. Dr. Meyer Schapiro was good enough to read the twelfth and thirteenth chapters and to make suggestions which I have freely adopted. Poststructuralism--as a name for a mode of thinking, a style of philosophizing, a kind of writing--has exercised a profound influence upon contemporary Western thought and the institution of the university. As a French and predominantly Parisian affair, poststructuralism is inseparable from the intellectual milieu of postwar France, a world dominated by Alexandre Kojève's and Jean Hyppolite's interpretations of Hegel, Jacques Lacan's reading of Freud, Gaston Bachelard's epistemology, George Canguilhem's studies of science, and Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialism. It is also inseparable from (...) the structuralist tradition of linguistics based upon the work of Ferdinand de Saussure and Roman Jacobson, and the structuralist interpretations of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Roland Barthes, Louis Althusser, and the early Michel Foucault. This article proposes that the `renewal' of Dewey might contributeto filling the gap between the pedagogical commitment tocontingency and plurality and the fact that the pedagogicaltradition, until now, has neutralized contingency and deniedits systematic meaning for education. Therefore, the maintraits of the `renewal of Dewey' are shown in thework of some Dewey scholars who, critically and creatively,reconstruct Dewey in the mirror of poststructural, communicational and constructive theory developments.Following Dewey, these researches balance the objectiveevaluation of Dewey's work by a deliberate and (...) overtpursuit of their own intentions and (pre-)selections by the scholars.Intersubjectivity and communication are key concepts in thisrenewal of pragmatism rejecting the subject-centered philosophy of consciousness, the traditional westernepistemology and metaphysics. The turn to the philosophicalpriority of the unforeseeable also leads to anunderstanding of action as an essentialfocus. In this context Dewey's pragmatistic view of radical democracy is received as a non-foundationaltheory and the concept of consensus is criticized.The scholars clarify that the boundaries of the subjectare broadened by communicative destabilization.At the end of the article it is asked what the renewal-dimensions mean for education locatedin the public sphere. This dissertation constructs a shared plane between the thought processes of two philosophers, American pragmatist John Dewey and French poststructuralist Gilles Deleuze, by juxtaposing philosophical concepts that, at first sight, appear to be separated by time, place and culture. The methodology for the project is derived from the cartographic method employing the contemporary cultural studies' format of diverse forms of mapping. ;The structure of the dissertation, reflecting its title, is three-fold. First, by introducing several novel concepts in their epistemological, social, (...) affective, ethical and aesthetic dimensions, as they arise in Deleuze's original works as well as in his collaborative projects with social psychologist Felix Guattari, my intent is to establish Deleuze's philosophical position as pragmatic in the best American tradition. Second, I read certain excerpts from Dewey through the lens of Deleuze's conceptualizations and neologisms in order to discover the plurality of meanings and the relevance of Deweyan thought to a contemporary context. Third, and following the emergent interconnections between the two philosophers, I revisit Deleuze's philosophy to consider its potential implications for education. The latter addresses specific issues that result in chapters focusing on the following: the problematics of human subjectivity, the dynamic of language and communication, the role of intuition in inquiry and Deleuze's new image of thought, Deleuze's concept of "becoming-child" and learning from experience. ;References to Charles Sanders Peirce's logic as semiotics, Nel Noddings' relational ethics, and contemporary research in self-organization and complex systems support and supplement this project's main thesis regarding the continuity between Deleuze's method of nomadic inquiry and Dewey's educational philosophy. For both, epistemology is future-oriented and is inseparable from ethics in terms of values constructed during the experiential and experimental process. Experience is rendered meaningful not by reference to abstract Universals but by treating concepts as objects of multiple encounters depending on particular situations. ;Finally, I critically examine the practical effects of applying Deleuze's philosophy to qualitative research in education. I recommend, with regard to the context of schooling, that Gilles Deleuze's philosophical position is recognized in educational theory and practice in connection with the new, postmodern, scholarship on Dewey.
