There has been much recent philosophical discussion concerning the relationship between emotion and feeling. However, everyday talk of 'feeling' is not restricted to emotional feeling and the current emphasis on emotions has led to a neglect of other kinds of feeling. These include feelings of homeliness, belonging, separation, unfamiliarity, power, control, being part of something, being at one with nature and 'being there'. Such feelings are perhaps not 'emotional'. However, I suggest here that they do form a distinctive group; all (...) of them are ways of 'finding ourselves in the world'. Indeed, our sense that there is a world and that we are 'in it' is, I suggest, constituted by feeling. I offer an analysis of what such 'existential feelings' consist of, showing how they can be both 'bodily feelings' and, at the same time, part of the structure of intentionality. (shrink)

The paper examines the significance of embarrassment for a concept of political publicity. It is critical of how the common interpretation of this apparently social phenomenon as a “milder form of shame” leads to a functionalist interpretation. According to this interpretation, embarrassment regulates given normative structures by initiating or even motivating self-criticism. In contrast, the article shows, first, that embarrassment cannot occur at all in a public sphere that is thought of exclusively in normative terms, and second, that the phenomenon (...) is primordially not reflexive. In embarrassment, one is not immediately “thrown back on oneself” but tries to find a relation to one’s public figure. A philosophical reflection on this pursuit reveals the constitution of normative structures. In this light, embarrassment presents itself as a genuinely political phenomenon. (shrink)

This article aims at conceptualising the notion of embarrassment as a negativistic figure of thought that takes the experience of one’s own non-sovereignty as a starting point and emphasises an engagement with situations of not-knowing. This consideration is clarified in discussion with the figure of Socrates or with the philosophical attitude of Socrates. Because the negativistic thrust of the conceptualisation undertaken is reminiscent of irony, the paper then addresses the question of what distinguishes embarrassment understood as a figure of thought (...) from irony. For this purpose, Kierkegaard’s reading of Socratic irony is drawn upon. It is shown that irony is inherently a negativism, which in the last consequence aims at a retention of rights; but this is exactly what embarrassment avoids, because, as the article shows, it is not a negativism of strength, but of weakness. Die Originalität von Helmuth Plessners Philosophie besteht darin, dass sie die praktisch nötigen Ermöglichungsstrukturen und Grenzen anthropologischer Vergleiche in der personalen Lebensführung aufdeckt. Sie leistet diese Rekonstruktion, indem sie phänomenologische, hermeneutische und dialektische Methoden kombiniert, um qualitative Grenzerfahrungen, deren Deutung und Interpretation philosophisch untersuchen zu können. Theoretisch setzt diese Untersuchung auf die lebenspraktische These, dass sich das Wesen des Menschen nicht feststellen lässt, sondern auch künftig der personalen Lebensführung unergründlich bleibt. Die naturphilosophische Fundierung bioanthropologischer Vergleiche legt die exzentrische Positionalität als (...) den Ermöglichungs- und Begrenzungsgrund frei. Die sozial- und kultur-philosopische Fundierung sozial- und kultur-anthropologischer Vergleiche rekonstruiert das privat-öffentliche Doppelgängertum von Personen in ihrer Mitwelt als diesen Grund. Die geschichtsphilosophische Fundierung politisch-anthropologischer Vergleiche legt zumindest immanent transzendente Utopien als denjenigen Ermöglichungs- und Begrenzungsgrund frei, der sich dem Umgang mit einem globalen Hochkapitalismus gewachsen zeigen kann. English summary: When we are ashamed, we are ashamed of something in front of somebody. We can also be made to feel ashamed by others and can make others feel ashamed. We can be ashamed for others and be ashamed of ourselves. In her phenomenological studies, Hilge Landweer establishes the relationship between such everyday experiences and the social character of shame. Under what circumstances does shame originate and how does it change? Can shame be understood as a sanction? How closely (...) are shame and power connected? Hilge Landweer shows that the recognition of norms of action can be described as a process of power and that it is expressed by shame. German description: Wenn wir uns schamen, so schamen wir uns fur etwas vor jemandem. Wir konnen von anderen beschamt werden und unsererseits andere beschamen. Wir konnen uns fur andere und vor uns selbst schamen. An solche Alltagserfahrungen knupft Hilge Landweer in ihren phanomenologischen Untersuchungen der Sozialitat von Scham an. Unter welchen Bedingungen kann Scham entstehen und verandert werden? Kann Scham als Sanktion aufgefasst werden? Wie eng sind Scham und Macht verbunden? Hilge Landweer zeigt, dass die Anerkennung von Handlungsnormen als Machtprozess beschrieben werden kann. Normen werden uber Scham leiblich im Individuum verankert und dadurch bestatigt. Die Hauptwirkung der Machtprozesse besteht dabei weniger in akuter Scham als in der Schamvermeidung. In genauen Beschreibungen und Strukturanalysen der Scham untersucht Hilge Landweer Grenzen der Veranderbarkeit dieses Gefuhls. Dabei verbindet sie unterschiedliche Diskussionsfelder der Philosophie, auf denen Gefuhle thematisiert werden: die Phanomenologie der Gefuhle, die analytische Debatte um die Rationalitat der Gefuhle und die moralphilosophische Diskussion um deren normenfundierende Rolle. Mit ihrem erweiterten phanomenologischen Instrumentarium greift sie klarend in die interdisziplinare Diskussionen von Ethnologie, Soziologie und Psychoanalyse der Scham ein. (shrink)
