Despite the apparent relationship between personal values and entrepreneurship, this topic t has been subject to little academic research. This article aims to explain, in the Brazilian context, how the personal values of entrepreneurs influence the degree of professionalism in their business. The article uses a descriptive and exploratory quantitative approach, with data collected via a survey and focus group. Results show that, in the Brazilian context, ethics and capitalist values have a greater influence on professionalism than do risk, innovation, (...) family history, etc. Certain personal values of small-business entrepreneurs become organizational values that drive their actions in challenging environments. The finding that only one of the ten independent variables has been considered statistically influential on professionalism constitutes its main theoretical contribution. It rethinks professionalism, no longer as a dependent variable, but as a personal value, like the rest, in independent, innovative and sovereign way. (shrink)

The reception of the translations of Aristotelian and pseudo-Aristotelian works at the University of Paris in the thirteenth century promoted a new understanding of the sciences as specialized fields of knowledge. The huge amount of translations required a new organization of knowledge, which included novel subjects and categories. Among these there is a very special case, namely the pseudo-Aristotelian De plantis, translated from Arabic into Latin and then back into Greek to be re-translated into Latin again. De plantis was included (...) in the new curriculum in Ripoll 109, and constituted the main source for botanical studies until the sixteenth century. Throughout this paper we will explore the reception and impact of De plantis in both the Arabic and the Latin traditions. We aim to show its foundational role in the development of botany as a theoretical discipline within the natural sciences. (shrink)

To what extent do early intuitions about ownership depend on cultural and socio-economic circumstances? We investigated the question by testing reasoning about third party ownership conflicts in various groups of three- and five-year-old children (N = 176), growing up in seven highly contrasted social, economic, and cultural circumstances (urban rich, poor, very poor, rural poor, and traditional) spanning three continents. Each child was presented with a series of scripts involving two identical dolls fighting over an object of possession. The child (...) had to decide who of the two dolls should own the object. Each script enacted various potential reasons for attributing ownership: creation, familiarity, first contact, equity, plus a control/neutral condition with no suggested reasons. Results show that across cultures, children are significantly more consistent and decisive in attributing ownership when one of the protagonists created the object. Development between three and five years is more or less pronounced depending on culture. The propensity to split the object in equal halves whenever possible was generally higher at certain locations (i.e., China) and quasi-inexistent in others (i.e., Vanuatu and street children of Recife). Overall, creation reasons appear to be more primordial and stable across cultures than familiarity, relative wealth or first contact. Oliva Sabuco's New Philosophy of Human nature (1587) is an early modern philosophy of medicine that challenged the views of the successors to Aristotle, especially Galen and Ibn Sina (Avicenna). It also challenged the paradigm of the male as the epitome of the human and instead offers a gender-neutral philosophy of human nature. Now largely forgotten, it was widely read and influential amongst philosophers of medicine including DeClave, LePois, Harvey,Southey and others, particularly for its account of the role of (...) the nervous system and cerebrospinal fluid in mind-body interaction. In this article I trace its early influence by tracing provenance of the editions produced during the lifetime of its author. (shrink)

As a result of the doctoral research developed by the main author (Vargas-Chaves, 2017), it was identified the evolution and perspectives of the pharmaceutical patent in the international trade system, as well as it future legal research needs in this topic, both immediate and long-term. Furthermore, a number of problems of public health were highlighted in which the patent-term-extension mechanisms have produced a lack of access to medicines.

Moral subjectivism is commonly associated with out-of-favour theories like, e.g., Alfred Ayer’s emotivism or John Mackie’s error theory. This paper approaches the field against the background of the attitudinal character of morality and religion. The possibility of a brand of moral subjectivism is established which is common to Ayer’s and Mackie’s theories in name only yet still has significant merits. The perspective from action theory and the philosophy of mind suggests that the problem of moral obligation, central to moral philosophy, (...) is more convincingly dealt with by subjectivism than by its rivals: In contrast to realism or even relativism (with which subjectivism is often confused), subjectivism can help to explain the peculiarities of obligation without forcing us to disregard the parallel problem in the field of religion. This finding calls into question the rationale for, as well as the success of, central assumptions in ontology and semantics which the realist so freely hands out in order to make his point: If religious facts and the truth-aptness of religious judgements will not explain religious obligation, moral facts and the truth-aptness of moral judgements will not help the moral realist either. So unless we do not wish to simply cast the problem of moral obligation aside, in future, moral subjectivism must be seriously considered as a worthwhile position in its own right. Die handlungstheoretische Betrachtung von Moral und Religion mit Hilfe der Philosophie des Geistes legt nahe, dass dieser moralische Subjektivismus mit dem für die Moralphilosophie zentralen Problem des moralischen Sollens besser umgehen kann als seine Rivalen: Anders als der Realismus oder gar der Relativismus (mit dem der Subjektivismus oft verwechselt wird), kann der hier ausgeleuchtete Subjektivismus mit der besonderen Verbindlichkeit moralischer Forderungen umgehen, ohne die Parallele zur besonderen Verbindlichkeit religiöser Forderungen in Abrede stellen zu müssen. Die Rolle und Durchschlagkraft der vom Realisten so freigiebig gespendeten ontologischen oder semantischen Zusatzannahmen er- scheint vor diesem Hintergrund fragwürdig. Dem religiösen Realisten wird man vergleichbare Annahmen nicht zugeben wollen und muss es auch nicht. Dann aber können wir die Erklärung besonderer Verbindlichkeit generell nicht auf Ontologie oder Semantik gründen. Der verbreitete Appell an sogenannte moralische Tatsachen oder die behauptete Wahrheitsfähigkeit moralischer Sätze erweist sich so als wirkungslos. Sofern wir das Problem des moralischen Sollens überhaupt weiter ernst nehmen wollen, muss der moralische Subjektivismus als Position künftig ernsthaft erwogen werden. (shrink)

What is discrimination and what makes wrongful discrimination wrong? Even after an ever-rising tide of research over the course of the past twenty-five or so years these questions still remain hard to answer. Exercising candid and self-critical hindsight, Larry Alexander, who contributed his fair share to this tide, thus remarked: “All cases of discrimination, if wrongful, are wrongful either because of their quite contingent consequences or perhaps because they are breaches of promises or fiduciary duties.” If this is true it (...) raises serious doubts as to how wrongful discrimination can be a moral wrong in itself. Also, the question comes up as to who it is who breaches a promise or a fiduciary duty. This paper defends the view that the substance of these remarks is better understood by couching them in a political approach towards discrimination. Against this background, they give rise to real and pressing concerns. Once we conceptualise the realm political along Hobbesian lines as the battleground comprising both the private sphere of the individual and the public sphere of the commonwealth it emerges that discrimination has different significance with regard to these respective spheres. In order to illustrate this, I adopt Kasper Lippert-Rasmussen’s descriptive account of discrimination as „differential treatment on the basis of membership of a socially salient group“ and the common view that wrongful discrimination is wrong because it is harmful, disrespectful, or both. In the private sphere the case can be made for morally permissible cases of discrimination. Sexual discrimination due to sexual self-determination with consequently freely choosing your sexual or romantic partner is the central case in point. Where somebody feels unfairly rejected and consequently hurt neither the charge of harm inflicted nor that of disrespect endured need be justified. No “breach of promises or fiduciary duties” is involved. The case is different, however, when it comes to the fiduciary of power. In discriminating, he who exercises the power of the commonwealth necessarily breaches a promise and a fiduciary duty. Discrimination thus appears to be more of a problem of political philosophy than one of applied ethics. The suggestion that emotions are, in a way, essential to moral judgement has been getting attention in recent literature. Jesse Prinz says that emotionist theories involve at least one of the following claims: (i) emotions are necessary and sufficient for the acquisition of moral concepts (epistemic emotionism); (ii) emotions are necessary and sufficient to determine moral properties (metaphysical emotionism). According to Prinz, some empirical results in moral psychology can support these kinds of emotionism (especially the first one). In The emotional (...) construction of morals, Prinz presents the famous dumbfounding cases, in which interviewees maintain a moral judgement even when confronted with the fact that they cannot articulate reasons why, as evidence for an emotionist view of moral judgement. There is, however, controversy regarding the interpretation of such cases: to begin with, it seems possible to interpret them through reasons, as suggested by Sinott-Armstrong, Yin and Stanley (2019); also, even if there are no reasons being considered, it is possible, as suggested by Jones (2006) and Alves (2013), that dumbfounded moral judgement isn’t a genuine example of moral judgement, since the subjects do not possess basic moral concepts. I start with moral dumbfounding cases and Prinz’s emotionist interpretation of them and later consider the alternative interpretations. Even though Prinz’s reading is initially appealing, it seems the empirical evidence does not support a sentimentalist metaethics as much as he suggests, and the appeal to reasons is still essential in understanding moral judgement. -/- . The traditional conception of risk is probabilistic, according to which the degree of risk of an event is determined by the probability of its occurence. Recently this view was challenged by Duncan Pritchard (2015, 2016), who suggested a modal theory of risk, centered in the idea that the riskiness of events depends on the modal distance between the actual world and worlds where the event obtains. What is attractive about this theory, according to Pritchard, is that it explains our judgement (...) about cases in which two equally probable events seem to have different degrees of risk. The modal theory of risk, however, has its own shortcomings: according to Bricker (2018), there are cases in which risk judgements are not tracking modal distance; there is also the problem of determining the risk of events that occur in the actual world, since the theory seems to imply that they are maximally risky because the actual world is maximally similar to itself (EBERT; SMITH; DURBACH, 2020). The modal conception of risk is also at odds with the most natural forms of reasoning over the morality of risk imposition. I begin exploring the two conceptions of risk, emphasizing their strenghts and weaknesses. I then argue that the probabilistic conception can be defended from objections, and a pluralistic theory of risk, although less unified, deserves to be considered. -/- . (shrink)

Much of what has been discussed in the theory of reference in the last twenty-five years is strongly influenced by considerations centring on the business of devising a semantics for quantified modal logic. In this context, discussion of the property of rigidity plays an important role. This property is conceived of as a semantic modal property that distinguishes proper names from descriptions. It is argued that there is a semantic modal asym- metry between expressions of these types. In this talk (...) I shall challenge this assumption. By examining the intuitive Kripkean argument or test employed I arrive at two rather nonconformist results: Firstly, it seems that the test does not establish a genuine semantic asymmetry: Rigidity appears to be a pragmatic property. Secondly, the test does not seem to demonstrate an asymmetry at all: When applied correctly it suggests that both proper names and descriptions (even discounting notorious cases like “the even prime”) can be used rigidly—or so I shall argue. Contemporary political philosophy is, to a certain degree, dominated by a family of theories that invoke hypothetical procedures as a method of normative justification. This article intends to analyze Axel Honneth’s critique of the so-called “proceduralism” in theories of justice, as well as to examine the author’s alternative proposal for a justification method, what he calls “normative reconstruction”. Honneth’s complaints are divided in three parts: critiques of the understanding of justice, the method of justification, and the scope of proceduralist theories (...) of justice are raised, each one receiving an alternative formulation by the author. After reading texts by Axel Honneth, John Rawls — author of "A theory of justice", in which he presents one of the most well-known proceduralist arguments — Jürgen Habermas and Nancy Fraser, who raise problems for Honneth’s normative reconstruction, we suspect that even though Honneth’s critique of proceduralism and his proposal of normative reconstruction seem initially plausible, they are only possible if we abandon the framework of political philosophy to do what is usually called “social philosophy”. This paper aims to understand Kant’s conception of Enlightenment and, in particular the idea of “Sapere Aude” (dare to think for yourself), described in his article published in 1784 An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment ? where he defines pre-enlightened people as living in a self-imposed “minority”. In the first part of the article, I will develop this notion, along with a process of domestication of human beings. In the second part, I will examine the solutions proposed (...) to overcome this situation, with particular emphasis on the development by the State, of the so-called “public use of reason”. The Australian Federal Government has announced a two-year trial scheme to compensate living organ donors. The compensation will be the equivalent of six weeks paid leave at the rate of the national minimum wage. In this article I analyse the ethics of compensating living organ donors taking the Australian scheme as a reference point. Considering the long waiting lists for organ transplantations and the related costs on the healthcare system of treating patients waiting for an organ, the 1.3 million AUD (...) the Australian Government has committed might represent a very worthwhile investment. I argue that a scheme like the Australian one is sufficiently well designed to avoid all the ethical problems traditionally associated with attaching a monetary value to the human body or to parts of it, namely commodification, inducement, exploitation, and equality issues. Therefore, I suggest that the Australian scheme, if cost-effective, should represent a model for other countries to follow. Nonetheless, although I endorse this scheme, I will also argue that this kind of scheme raises issues of justice in regard to the distribution of organs. Thus, I propose that other policies would be needed to supplement the scheme in order to guarantee not only a higher number of organs available, but also a fair distribution. (shrink)

Die vorliegende Schrift unternimmt es, die Ethik auf eine neue Grundlage zu stellen. Nachdem seit dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert im Zuge der Metaphysikkritik und fundamentalontologischer Ansätze der Versuch einer Grundlegung ethischen Denkens weitgehend verabschiedet, zumindest aber in seiner Bedeutung relativiert wurde, soll ihr nun wieder – oder besser: erstmals – ein dauerhaftes Fundament gegeben werden. An die Stelle des herrschenden ethischen Relativismus gilt es eine objektive Ethik zu setzen. Das verlangt eine gründliche Untersuchung des eigentlichen Moments unseres Daseins – nicht (...) nur, aber im Sinne einer eingehenden Reflexion vorzüglich des Menschen. Gefunden wird es in einer näheren Betrachtung des Moments des Bewusstseins. Bewusstsein ist immer Bewusstsein von etwas. Dieses etwas ist aber zunächst nichts, das von dem unterschieden wäre, was Bewusstsein hat. Der Fehler der bisherigen philosophischen Überlegungen liegt darin, dieses „etwas“ mit einem wenn auch unklaren eigenen ontologischen Status versehen zu haben. Aus dieser Subjekt-Objekt-Trennung aber ergeben sich nicht nur zahlreiche Schwierigkeiten, aus den damit eingehenden Missverständnissen erwächst die Krise, die nicht zuletzt jetzt zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts allenthalben zu spüren ist. Denn genauer besehen besteht kein Konflikt zwischen Kulturen oder zwischen vermeintlichen Kulturbewahrern und Kulturpluralisten, sondern tiefer ein Konflikt in der (bestehenden) Kultur selbst. Diese Objektität des Bewusstseins, die in der Abhandlung breit dargelegt wird, verweist auf die Leiblichkeit. Ohne Leib ist eine Verwirklichung des Bewusstseins nicht zu haben. Gerade dies nicht zu sehen scheint ein wesentlicher Zug der bisherigen Philosophiegeschichte zu sein. Daraus aber ergeben sich gravierende Schwierigkeiten und Fehlentwicklungen der Identität, was in der zeitgenössischen Rede von der Identitätsfalle zum Ausdruck kommt. Identität wird fälschlicherweise an akzidenziellen Merkmalen festgemacht – nicht nur, aber doch weitgehend und nahezu ubiquitär an den Genitalien. Wird dabei eine binäre Sexualität festgeschrieben, so wird die wahre Identität des Bewusstsein habenden Lebewesens verkannt. In den menschlichen Gesellschaften zeigt sich dies in dem nahezu überall und in allen bisherigen geschichtlichen Epochen vorherrschenden Bekleidungszwang. Haben wir die Objektität des Bewusstseins erkannt, wird das Fehlerhafte dieser Entwicklung deutlich. Denn dieser Zwang, genauer gesagt die dadurch vollzogene Verhüllung verhindert, wie die Untersuchung aufzeigt, die Einsicht in die je eigene Identität, die in der Leiblichkeit als dem notwendigen Moment des verwirklichten objektitären Bewusstseins besteht. Damit wird klar: Dem Sapere aude! der Aufklärung des 18. Jahrhunderts, die viel Richtiges angestoßen hat, muss ein Nudare aude! zur Seite, wenn nicht vorangestellt werden. Damit gelangt das philosophische Denken zu einer erstaunlichen und überraschenden, doch aber fundamentalen Einsicht – nämlich, salopp gesagt, die Hüllen fallen zu lassen (genauer gesagt es jedem selbst zu überlassen, ob er dies tut oder nicht)! Der erste Teil der Schrift widmet sich der Ontologie im Sinne einer echten Anthropologie. Um grob gesprochen das Wesen des Menschen (oder von selbstbewussten Lebewesen allgemein) zu bestimmen, muss die Entwicklung des Bewusstseins betrachtet werden. Gezeigt wird, dass es, damit ein Bewusstsein wirklich wird, Bewusstseinsinhalte geben muss. Ist das Bewusstsein in diesem Sinne grundlegend objektitär, muss aber doch als Bedingung seiner Möglichkeit ein davor befindliches, noch nicht wirkliches Bewusstsein ganz ohne Bewusstseinsinhalte angenommen werden: das metaobjektitäre Bewusstsein. Bewusstseinsinhalte gibt es indes nur, wenn das Bewusstsein einen Leib hat. Sprich: Wirkliches (in die Wirklichkeit getretenes) Bewusstsein heißt Leib haben. Dasein ist nicht mit dem Menschen gleichzusetzen, wie dies Heidegger noch im frühen 20. Jahrhundert tat, sondern mit der Objektität. Die Entwicklungsgrundlage dazu findet sich im metaobjektitären Bewusstsein mit seiner Veranlagung zur sinnlichen Wahrnehmung. Hier nun lässt sich die Subjekt-Objekt-Trennung überwinden, denn ein Subjekt mit potenziellem Bewusstsein, aber noch ganz ohne Bewusstseinsinhalte – und damit ohne Leib als Voraussetzung sinnlicher Wahrnehmung –, ist nun nicht mehr denkbar. Ebenso undenkbar ist dann aber auch ein Objekt, das, ganz getrennt vom Subjekt, überhaupt erst in diesem Bewusstseinsinhalte hervorruft. Im zweiten Teil geht es um den Aufweis einer anthropologischen Ethik auf der Basis der Objektität des Bewusstseins. Haben wir die Subjekt-Objekt-Dichotomie überwunden, lässt sich die Ethik transzendental verankern. Hierzu muss der metaobjektitäre Entwicklungsprozess des Bewusstseins betrachtet werden: Die Entwicklungsgrundlage ist offen, der Entwicklungsprozess frei. Das aber verweist uns darauf, dass der jeweilige Leib, in dem sich das Bewusstsein verwirklicht, so und nicht anders geworden ist. Dieses Gewordene kann aber auf dieser metaempirischen Grundlage nur gut sein. Im Umgang mit unserer Leiblichkeit zeigt sich aber geradezu eine Verleugnung, der im Zwang, seine „Nacktheit“ zu verhüllen, zum Ausdruck kommt. Zurückzuführen ist dies darauf, dass wir unsere biologische Geschlechtlichkeit als identitätsstiftend begreifen, obwohl es sich bei den Geschlechtsorganen nur um sekundäre, akzidenzielle Merkmale handelt; die eigentliche Identität ist die Spezies, das Menschsein. Aus dieser Identitätsverkennung ergeben sich zahlreiche Schwierigkeiten mit teils katastrophalen Folgen. Eine kritische Untersuchung der Scham, aber auch der sprachlichen Entwicklung etwa in den Versuchen einer „geschlechterneutralen“ Bezeichnungsweise zeigt die Fehlentwicklungen, denn dadurch werden die Diskriminierungen nicht überwunden, sondern vielmehr weiter festgeschrieben. Auf dieser Basis wird im dritten Teil auf einige praktische Aspekte eingegangen, die sich mit dem neuen Prinzip des Nudare aude! ergeben. Ein Blick auf die Freikörperkultur offenbart Ansätze zu einem anderen Umgang mit der eigenen Leiblichkeit, aber auch die Schwierigkeiten und Unzulänglichkeiten, die den bisherigen historischen Versuchen anhaften. Eingegangen wird auf Vorbehalte gegenüber dem öffentlichen Nacktsein, aber auch auf einige Inkonsequenzen etwa im Hinblick auf kritische Stimmen zur Verschleierung von Frauen im Islam. All dies macht deutlich, wie wichtig eine philosophische Grundlegung ist, wie sie die Analyse der Objektität des Bewusstseins durchgeführt hat, denn sie zeigt, dass eine Vollendung der Aufklärung und eine Fortsetzung der trotz aller Einschränkungen verheißungsvollen Zivilisation der Menschheit nur möglich ist, wenn die fundamentale Entfremdung überwunden wird, die sich aus der unhintergehbaren Leiblichkeit des im Menschen sich verwirklichenden Bewusstseins ergibt. Dem steht nun der Würdebegriff des Menschen entgegen, hat er doch seinen Ursprung gerade in der Spaltung des menschlichen Subjekts von seinem biologischen Leib. Die „Wiedervereinigung“ ohne Preisgabe der Idee der Menschenwürde scheint also nur möglich zu sein, wenn aus der philosophischen Erkenntnis auch ein entsprechendes Handeln folgt. Die Schlussfolgerungen aus der Objektität des Bewusstseins verweisen so letztendlich auf die Praxis, wie es für eine Ethik nicht anders sein kann. (shrink)

Kant’s Prolegomena is a piece of philosophical advertising: it exists to convince the open-minded “future teacher” of metaphysics that the true critical philosophy — i.e., the Critique — provides the only viable solution to the problem of metaphysics (i.e. its failure to make any genuine progress). To be effective, a piece of advertising needs to know its audience. This chapter argues that Kant takes his reader to have some default sympathies for the common-sense challenge to metaphysics originating from Thomas Reid (...) and his followers; this fact in turn explains his rhetorical strategies in the Prolegomena, particularly regarding the presentation of the problem of metaphysics. The chapter draws attention to the importance of Shaftesbury, who, with a nod to Horace, had argued for the deployment of humour to disarm fraudulent claims to epistemic and moral authority. Kant looks to Horace himself to poke fun at the common-sense challenge to metaphysics, and from there to indicate the general shape of the particular argumentative strategies of the Critique — that project that alone, in his view, can promise some kind of future for metaphysics. This paper explores a particular kind of epistemic injustice against children. Following Fricker and Dotson’s ideas on epistemic injustice and testimonial smothering respectively, I use the terminology offered by them to examine the Christchurch Civic Creche case (1993).

This aims to discuss the separation of the substance presented by Aristotle in Book Z of Metaphysics. In Z 1 the substance is prior in three aspects, namely as to the definition, the knowledge and the time. Aristotle's justification that substance is first in time is because it is the only category that is separate. Based on contemporary interpreters, we will discuss the separation as ontological separation associated with the definitional separation.

In A Parting of the Ways Michael Friedman proposed to conceive the contemporary divide between analytic philosophy (AP) and continental philosophy (CP) as the outcome of the bifurcation between the Neokantians of Heidelbarg and Marburg. According to Friedman, Carnap can be characterized as the executor of the Marburg school, while Heidegger is to be considered as the heir of the Southwest Neokantianism. In this paper it is argued that Carnap was much closer to the Southwest Neokantianism than usually recognized. To (...) some extent, Carnap’s project in the Aufbau may be described as an attempt to modernize the Neokantian approach of the Southwest school with the help of modern relational logic. This entails that Carnap cannot be lined so easily with the Marburg school as Friedman assumes. (shrink)
