Lidská práva jsou v současné době předmětem řady komplexních otázek, které jsou politické, sociální či právní povahy. Abychom na otázky mohli smysluplně odpovídat, musíme brát ohled i na obecnější filosofické souvislosti a mít jasnější představu o tom, co lidská práva jsou a na jakých základech stojí. V předkládaném textu si klademe otázku, zdali máme v současné době k dispozici plně filosoficky fundovanou koncepci založení a legitimizace lidských práv. Předkládáme postupně různé současné přístupy, které jsou kandidáty na řešení tohoto problému a (...) přinášíme jejich kritické zhodnocení. Východiskem je pro nás představa lidských práv jako evidentních pravd a od ní odvozené přístupy zakládající je na racionální či emocionální evidenci. Dále se věnujeme možnosti náboženského založení lidských práv, přístupům přirozenoprávním, utilitaristickým a koncepcím vycházejícím z pojmu důstojnosti. Stručně jsou zmíněny i některé další související teorie a historický kontext analyzovaných pojetí. V závěru na položenou otázku odpovídáme, že zcela uspokojivá filosofická teorie lidských práv stále není k dispozici, a přinášíme také vlastní doporučení pro řešení předložených problémů zkoumaných teorií. Salvador Dali titled one of his books Diary of a Genius. You might think that anyone who would title his book thus must be a spoilt brat and should be “cured” of the illusion that he, or she, is so amazing. But it seems to me that there is a “position” one can occupy in which this is difficult.

In the wake of the global financial crisis of 2008, the greatest economic disaster since the Great Depression, the cover story of the July 18th 2009 issue of The Economist, entitled “What went wrong with economics,” opened with an unequivocally incriminating statement: “Of all the economic bubbles that have been pricked, few have burst more spectacularly than the reputation of economics itself.” In the months surrounding this indictment, many influential economists, including several Nobel laureates, were drawn to the same embarrassing (...) conclusion. Despite the existence of a handful of Cassandras, economists, as a group, had failed to foresee the crash. This short essay reviews the criticisms addressed to modern economic theory in the immediate aftermath of the crash. Overall, the main issues raised by critics were that (a) economists versed in the dominant models in macroeconomics and finance have been blinded to the possibility that we live in an uncertain and complex world; and (b) that the content of current economics education has sidelined many of the relevant insights to be found in the history of the discipline. This has led the critics to call for changes in the institutional structure of discipline, with a particular emphasis on the promotion of interdisciplinarity, and theoretical and methodological pluralism. Objective: To determine the frequency and type of food allergy in patients having atopic dermatitis and to show the presence of mutations genetically. -/- Methods: Patients diagnosed as having atopic dermatitis according to the Hanifin Rajka criteria were evaluated retrospectively. Eosinophils, total immunoglobin E, milk-specific immunoglobulin E, egg-specific immunoglobulin E, wheat-specific immunoglobulin E, and filaggrin gene mutation results were recorded. Nutrient elimination was performed for 1 month in patients who were thought to have food allergy owing to skin prick (...) test and milk-specific immunoglobulin E results. The diagnosis was confirmed through a food loading test for the patients who benefited from the elimination. -/- Results: Of the 66 patients included in the study, 42 (63.63%) were male. Food allergies were detected in 40 patients (60.6%). According to the Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis index, 9 out of 16 patients aged 40 years and over had food allergy and 31 out of 50 patients aged under 40 years had food allergy. There was no significant difference between the groups (P=.56). All patients included in the study were examined for filaggrin. Only 1 patient with a Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis index below 40 and milk allergy was found to have p.R501 * and c.2282-2285delCAGT mutations. -/- Conclusion: Atopic dermatitis food allergy was found to be 60.6%. The most common improvement was egg allergy and egg elimination. There was no difference between atopic dermatitis severity and food allergy and laboratory tests. Severe atopic dermatitis was found to be 24.2%. (shrink)

... The Philosophers’ Quarrel is an enjoyable tour through the salons, great cities and country retreats of the Enlightenment, in the company of some of its brightest stars. Although much of the tale turns on some tedious details of the various intrigues of Hume and Rousseau, together with their friends and collaborators, Zaretsky and Scott manage to provide their account with a number of interesting and valuable insights into the character of the thinkers involved and the social and cultural life (...) of Enlightenment Europe at this time. I particularly recommend this book to contemporary academics, who may be comforted and reassured to see that prickly, neurotic and insecure dispositions are not the invention of contemporary academic life.
