  1. Reflections on the (Post-)Human Condition: Towards New Forms of Engagement with the World?Simon Susen - 2022 - Social Epistemology 36 (1):63-94.
The main purpose of this paper is to examine the validity of the contention that, over the past decades, we have been witnessing the rise of the ‘posthuman condition’. To this end, the analysis draws on the work of the contemporary philosopher Rosi Braidotti. The paper is divided into four parts. The first part centres on the concept of posthumanism, suggesting that it reflects a systematic attempt to challenge humanist assumptions underlying the construction of ‘the human’. The second part focuses (...)

  • Critical theory in the Anthropocene: Marcuse, Marxism and ecology.Nick Stevenson - 2021 - European Journal of Social Theory 24 (2):211-226.
The politics of the Anthropocene has been widely debated within recent sociological theory. This article seeks to argue that Marxism, critical theory and especially the work of Herbert Marcuse have a great deal to contribute to these debates. Here, I seek to link together the recent revival of interest in the idea of the commons by the alter-globalisation movement and Marxist social theory in an attempt to challenge some of the dominant assumptions in respect of the nature/culture division and the (...)

  • Emancipation in the Anthropocene: Taking the dialectic seriously.Andrew Dobson - 2022 - European Journal of Social Theory 25 (1):118-135.
The purpose of this article is to articulate a conception of emancipation for the Anthropocene. First, the Kantian roots of emancipation understood as the capacity of rational beings to act according to self-chosen ends are explained. It is shown that this conception of emancipation sets the realm of autonomous beings humans over the realm of heteronomous beings. Accounts of the ‘humanisation of nature’ are analysed as incomplete attempts to overcome this dualism. It is argued that the root of this incompleteness (...)

  • Caught between the air and earth: A schizoanalytic critique of the role of the education in the development of a new airport.David R. Cole - 2022 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 54 (4):422-433.
This philosophy of education paper describes a schizophrenic situation. A new airport is being planned in the locale of a university which is a Centre of Excellence of Education for Sustainable Development, and the university is a major partner. The airport involves an investment in jobs, resources, and will encourage further economic development. The planners have named the inter-connected developments around the airport as the ‘Aerotropolis’, including new university facilities. One could argue that the airport is a classic example of (...)
