  1. The primordial stakeholder: Advancing the conceptual consideration of stakeholder status for the natural environment. [REVIEW]Cathy Driscoll & Mark Starik - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 49 (1):55-73.
This article furthers the argument for a stakeholder theory that integrates into managerial decision-making the relationship between business organizations and the natural environment. The authors review the literature on stakeholder theory and the debate over whom or what should count as a stakeholder. The authors also critique and expand the stakeholder identification and salience model developed by Mitchell and Wood (1997) by reconceptualizing the stakeholder attributes of power, legitimacy, and urgency, as well as by developing a fourth stakeholder attribute: proximity. • Talking ‘facts’: identity and rationality in industry perspectives on genetic modification.George Cheney, C. Kay Weaver & Alison Henderson - 2007 - Discourse Studies 9 (1):9-41.
Despite the potential political impact of industry attempts to influence public policy about genetic modification, little research has focused on critical understanding of industry perspectives. This article explores the rhetorical and discursive construction of public messages about this controversial issue by two major New Zealand export industries. The kiwifruit industry advocates a very cautious public policy position, while the dairy industry has been a strong advocate for the commercial development of genetic modification. We demonstrate that these industries draw on multiple (...)

  • Politicized or popularized? News values and news voices in China’s and Australia’s media discourse of climate change.Changpeng Huan - 2024 - Critical Discourse Studies 21 (2):200-217.
Despite worsening material realities of the climate, discursive tensions between a need to popularize climate issue and an increasing politicization trend in climate change communication continue to unfold. Politicizing climate change as an ideological conflict may mislead the public to perceive it as essentially a topic about politics rather than science and health. It also creates discursive and real political space for local governments and intergovernmental organizations to defray responsibilities and delay action. To closely examine the ways popularization and politicization (...)

  • Risk, language and discourse.Max Boholm - unknown
This doctoral thesis analyses the concept of risk and how it functions as an organizing principle of discourse, paying close attention to actual linguistic practice. Article 1 analyses the concepts of risk, safety and security and their relations based on corpus data. Lexical, grammatical and semantic contexts of the nouns risk, safety and security, and the adjectives risky, safe and secure are analysed and compared. Similarities and differences are observed, suggesting partial synonymy between safety and security and semantic opposition to (...)

  • Investigating the Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Risk Management Practices.Loren Falkenberg, Xiaoyu Liu & Hao Lu - 2022 - Business and Society 61 (2):496-534.
To date, the value of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities has primarily been measured through the company’s reputation, with little attention given to exploring whether there are internal influences between CSR and other management practices. We argue that the efficacy of CSR extends beyond a company’s reputation for managing social and environmental concerns; in particular, it can influence other business practices such as risk management. Our results suggest that (a) overall, firms with better CSR performance are more likely to adopt (...)
