  1. Outside the Classroom Walls: Perceptions of Professor Inappropriate Out-of-Class Conduct and Student Classroom Incivility among American Business Students.Rebecca M. Chory & Evan H. Offstein - 2017 - Journal of Academic Ethics 15 (3):197-214.
Under higher education’s contemporary consumer model, students are treated as customers and professors are encouraged to increase student engagement through more personal out-of-class interactions, often in social settings. In the course of this more personal student-faculty involvement, students inevitably encounter or learn of their professors’ occasional inappropriate or unethical behavior. In the present study, we investigated the impact of 145 American undergraduate Business students’ perceptions of their professors’ inappropriate out-of-class behavior on student beliefs and in-class behavior. Results indicate that student (...)

  • Character Strengths and Ethical Engagement in Online Faculty.Justina Or, Scott Greenberger & Melissa A. Milliken - 2022 - Journal of Academic Ethics 20 (4):533-547.
In this study, the researchers investigated the relationships between character strengths and ethical engagement in online faculty. One of the ethical duties for higher education faculty is to engage in effective teaching practices. As online higher education becomes increasingly popular, online faculty also bear this duty. Numerous studies have shown that character strengths cultivate ethical behavior. Hence, we sought to determine the relationship between character strengths and ethical engagement in online faculty. Specifically, we focused on intellectual character strengths, interpersonal character (...)

  • Development and Validation of a Measurement to Assess College Students’ Reactions to Faculty Incivility.Yariv Itzkovich & Dorit Alt - 2016 - Ethics and Behavior 26 (8):621-637.
This study was aimed at constructing and validating a measurement to assess students’ responses to faculty incivility. A mixed-method approach was implemented. A qualitative method was used to analyze responses to FI as described by college students. The results foregrounded four categories—exit, voice, loyalty, and neglect—in line with the theoretical EVLN model for describing reactions to stressful conditions. The students’ descriptions were formulated as short items. Following the qualitative results, a quantitative method was used to validate the developed EVLN questionnaire (...)

  • Students’ Emotional Well-Being, and Perceived Faculty Incivility and Just Behavior Before and During COVID-19.Dorit Alt, Yariv Itzkovich & Lior Naamati-Schneider - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
This research set out to measure the impact of the lockdown condition and social distancing imposed on higher education by the Israeli government during the COVID-19 period and the shift to online learning, on students’ emotional well-being, the way they perceived their teachers’ just behavior, and faculty incivility, compared to pre-pandemic conditions. An additional aim was to explore the set of connections among these factors. The total sample included 396 undergraduate students from three academic colleges. Data were gathered via three (...)

  • Cross-Validation of the Reactions to Faculty Incivility Measurement through a Multidimensional Scaling Approach.Dorit Alt & Yariv Itzkovich - 2017 - Journal of Academic Ethics 15 (3):215-228.
Incivility in the academic arena elicits a wide range of reactions: it interferes with learning, increases stress, feelings of disrespect and helplessness. Although reactions to incivility were mainly tested in workplaces, an extensive, robust framework to explain and measure responses to faculty incivility is yet to be offered. This study used Facet theory approach with a multidimensional scaling method of smallest space analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis to confirm the theoretical structure of reactions to FI. A mapping sentence was constructed (...)
