  1. Phenomenology of Online Spaces: Interpreting Late Modern Spatialities.Viktor Berger - 2020 - Human Studies 43 (4):603-626.
Sociological theories of space have so far not provided an in-depth analysis of online spaces. The paper addresses this issue by means of Löw’s relational theory of space. As this theory mainly focuses on material spaces, it is necessary to embrace the phenomenological perspective in order to apply it to the virtual realm. More recent phenomenological research has highlighted the ongoing mediatization or virtualization of the life-world. These theories, and presence research more generally, are useful for examining the layers of (...)

  • The a Priori Critique of the Possibility of a Phenomenology of Religion: A Response to the Special Issue on “Schutz and Religion”.Jonathan Tuckett - 2019 - Human Studies 42 (4):647-672.
This paper offers a critique of the special issue of Human Studies on “Alfred Schutz and Religion”. Following a line similar to that of Dominique Janicaud I call into question the very phenomenological status of the “phenomenology of religion” developed across the various contributions. Appealing to the Husserlian principle of freedom from presuppositions my critique focuses on the way these phenomenologies of religion talk about “religion”. At their core, the failure contained within these contributions is the failure to properly consider (...)

  • “Multiple Realities” Revisited: James and Schutz.Saulius Geniusas - 2020 - Human Studies 43 (4):545-565.
Although James and Schutz provide us with the most insightful investigations of multiple realities that we come across in philosophical, psychological and sociological literature, hardly any critical studies have addressed James’s and Schutz’s conceptions of multiple realities alongside each other. This paper fills this gap. The paper demonstrates that James and Schutz were concerned with the same set of issues in their respective accounts of multiple realities. It further shows the different ways in which James and Schutz understood multiple realities (...)

  • Phenomenology, Pokémon Go, and Other Augmented Reality Games: A Study of a Life Among Digital Objects.Nicola Liberati - 2018 - Human Studies 41 (2):211-232.
The aim of this paper is to analyse the effects on the everyday world of actual Augmented Reality games which introduce digital objects in our surroundings from a phenomenological point of view. Augmented Reality is a new technology aiming to merge digital and real objects, and it is becoming pervasively used thanks to the application for mobile devices Pokémon Go by Niantic. We will study this game and other similar applications to shed light on their possible effects on our lives (...)
