  1. “Getting your Body Back”: Postindustrial Fit Motherhood in Shape Fit Pregnancy Magazine.Faye Linda Wachs & Shari L. Dworkin - 2004 - Gender and Society 18 (5):610-624.
This investigation explores how contemporary motherhood is constituted in postindustrial consumer culture through a content and textual analysis of Shape Fit Pregnancy. Using all available issues of the magazine from its inception in 1997 to 2003, the authors first underscore a key tension surrounding pregnant women’s bodies within health and fitness discourse: That the pregnant form is presented as maternally successful yet aesthetically problematic. Second, the authors reveal how contemporary mothers are defined as newly responsible for a second shift of (...)

  • Embodied Motherhood: Women’s Feelings about Their Postpartum Bodies.Elena Neiterman & Bonnie Fox - 2015 - Gender and Society 29 (5):670-693.
Based on in-depth interviews, this article examines a sample of 48 Canadian women’s feelings about their changed postpartum bodies, their sense of self, and the factors that affect both. Our findings suggest that understanding women’s postpartum feelings requires contextualizing them in the work of infant care and women’s life circumstances, as well as ideologies about mothering and feminine appearance. Motherhood afforded the women in this study a new appreciation of their bodies, and a positive embodied sense of themselves, but only (...)

  • Resisting, reproducing, resigned? Low‐income pregnant women's discursive constructions and experiences of health and weight gain.Shannon Jette & Geneviève Rail - 2014 - Nursing Inquiry 21 (3):202-211.
In this article, we use qualitative methodology to explore how 15 low‐income women of diverse sociocultural location construct and experience health and weight gain during pregnancy, as well as how they position themselves in relation to messages pertaining to weight gain, femininity and motherhood that they encounter in their lives. Discussing the findings through a feminist poststructuralist lens, we conclude that the participants are complex, fragmented subjects, interpellated by multiple and at times conflicting subject positions. While the discourse of maternal (...)

  • The Corporeal Generosity of Maternity.Myra J. Hird - 2007 - Body and Society 13 (1):1-20.
Feminist analyses have made important contributions to the sociocultural experiences of pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding. This article draws upon recent theorizing within science studies to focus on the mattering of these processes. Specifically, the article expands upon Mauss's notion of the ‘gift’, which Diprose develops through the idea of ‘corporeal generosity’. I am interested in corporeal generosity insofar as it circumvents descriptions of relationships in terms of a closed economy in which resources are exchanged without excess or remainder. Corporeal generosity (...)

  • Silent bodies: Childfree women’s gendered and embodied experiences.Kristina Engwall & Helen Peterson - 2013 - European Journal of Women's Studies 20 (4):376-389.
This article reports from the first studies on voluntary childlessness in Sweden and addresses a so far neglected issue – the embodied experiences of childfree women. These childfree women reject and resist pronatalist understandings that conflate being a woman with being a mother. However, instead of explaining their childlessness by external factors, mentioned in previous research, the interviewed women created a positive feminine identity separated from motherhood with reference to their ‘silent bodies’, i.e. bodies without a biological urge to reproduce. (...)
