  1. Credulous acceptance in high-order argumentation frameworks with necessities: An incremental approach.Gianvincenzo Alfano, Andrea Cohen, Sebastian Gottifredi, Sergio Greco, Francesco Parisi & Guillermo R. Simari - 2024 - Artificial Intelligence 333 (C):104159.
Argumentation is an important research area in the field of AI. There is a substantial amount of work on different aspects of Dung’s abstract Argumentation Framework (AF). Two relevant aspects considered separately so far are: i) extending the framework to account for recursive attacks and supports, and ii) considering dynamics, i.e., AFs evolving over time. In this paper, we jointly deal with these two aspects. We focus on High-Order Argumentation Frameworks with Necessities (HOAFNs) which allow for attack and support relations (...)

  • The third and fourth international competitions on computational models of argumentation: Design, results and analysis.Stefano Bistarelli, Lars Kotthoff, Jean-Marie Lagniez, Emmanuel Lonca, Jean-Guy Mailly, Julien Rossit, Francesco Santini & Carlo Taticchi - 2024 - Argument and Computation:1-73.
The International Competition on Computational Models of Argumentation (ICCMA) focuses on reasoning tasks in abstract argumentation frameworks. Submitted solvers are tested on a selected collection of benchmark instances, including artificially generated argumentation frameworks and some frameworks formalizing real-world problems. This paper presents the novelties introduced in the organization of the Third (2019) and Fourth (2021) editions of the competition. In particular, we proposed new tracks to competitors, one dedicated to dynamic solvers (i.e., solvers that incrementally compute solutions of frameworks obtained (...)

  • A principle-based robustness analysis of admissibility-based argumentation semantics.Tjitze Rienstra, Chiaki Sakama, Leendert van der Torre & Beishui Liao - 2020 - Argument and Computation 11 (3):305-339.
The principle-based approach is a methodology to classify and analyse argumentation semantics. In this paper we classify seven of the main alternatives for argumentation semantics using a set of new robustness principles. These principles complement Baroni and Giacomin’s original classification and deal with the behaviour of a semantics when the argumentation framework changes due to the addition or removal of an attack between two arguments. We distinguish so-called persistence principles and monotonicity principles, where the former deal with the question of (...)

  • Constraints and changes: A survey of abstract argumentation dynamics.Sylvie Doutre & Jean-Guy Mailly - 2018 - Argument and Computation 9 (3):223-248.
This paper addresses the issue of the dynamic enforcement of a constraint in an argumentation system. The system consists in (1) an argumentation framework, made up, notably, of a set of arguments...

Dung’s abstract argumentation provides us with a general framework to deal with argumentation, non-monotonic reasoning and logic programming. For the extension-based semantics, one of the basic principles is I-maximality which is in particular related with the notion of skeptical justification. Another one is directionality which can be employed for the study of dynamics of argumentation. In this paper, we introduce two new extension-based semantics into Dung’s abstract argumentation, called grounded-like semantics and initial semantics which satisfy the I-maximality and directionality principles. (...)

  • Incremental computation for structured argumentation over dynamic DeLP knowledge bases.Gianvincenzo Alfano, Sergio Greco, Francesco Parisi, Gerardo I. Simari & Guillermo R. Simari - 2021 - Artificial Intelligence 300 (C):103553.
Structured argumentation systems, and their implementation, represent an important research subject in the area of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. Structured argumentation advances over abstract argumentation frameworks by providing the internal construction of the arguments that are usually defined by a set of (strict and defeasible) rules. By considering the structure of arguments, it becomes possible to analyze reasons for and against a conclusion, and the warrant status of such a claim in the context of a knowledge base represents the main (...)
