Medical schools are among the most important spaces for the history of the body. It is here that students come to know the anatomical bodies of their future patients and, through a process of cognitive and embodied practice, that the knowing bodies of future clinicians are also shaped. Practical and theoretical understandings of medicine are formed in these affective and historied buildings and in collaboration with a broad material culture of education. Medical schools are, however, both under-theorised and under-historicised. This (...) article integrates ‘materialist’ considerations of the body with Henri Lefebvre’s philosophy of space and rhythm in order to compare two markedly different spaces – the 19th-century Anatomy Department at Semmelweis University in Hungary and the mid-20th-century ‘skills laboratory’ at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. This comparison suggests that biomedical bodies are variously shaped by the agential and affective material histories present in the everyday experience of contemporary medical education. (shrink)

The article examines the patient-doctor relationship, relying on Michel Foucault’s concept of the clinical gaze. We argue that during the last decades, a profound transformation of the social nature of medicine took place, one that Foucault’s understanding of the clinical gaze cannot adequately account for. First, the article offers an elaboration of the three-node network of clinical gaze, the clinic, and nosology to explain the positioning of the doctor and the patient within the specific social ontology generated by the rise (...) of medicine. We then discuss intensive but irresolute developments brought by technological advancements, especially the X-ray tube. Finally, we argue that in the contemporary clinic, equipped with a plethora of sophisticated devices, the position of the doctor endured the most radical transformation in comparison with Foucault’s proponent of the clinical gaze at the dawn of modern medicine. Bu yazıda, ölmenin ve öldürmenin özel biçimlerinin yaşam ve ölüm arasındaki karanlık bir bölgede veyahut bulanık bir sınırda meydana geldiği gerçeğini göz önünde bulundurarak, ötenazi olgusu üzerinden, Michel Foucault ve Giorgio Agamben’in biyopolitika kavramsallaştırmaları arasında bir orta yol bulmayı deneyeceğim. Bu doğrultuda, tarihsel bir arka plan sunmanın elzem olduğuna inandığım çalışmaya, egemen iktidarın bugünkü felsefi temellerini aldığı ve teorik doğrulamalarını sağladığı mevcut hukuki-tıbbi-siyasi kompleksi anlamak için, ötenazi ve intiharın kısa bir tarihi ile başlayacak; ve iktidar ile ölüm arasındaki ilişkinin her (...) daim oldukça sorunlu olduğunu göstereceğim. İkinci olarak, Foucaultcu biyopolitika bağlamında ölümün ortadan kayboluşunun anlam[lar]ına yoğunlaşacak ve Foucault’nun düşüncesinin aksine, Batı’da yirminci yüzyılın ortalarından itibaren ölümün yeniden-keşfedilmesine benzer bir durumun gerçekleştiğini öne süreceğim. Ve nihayet makalenin üçüncü ve son kısmında, ötenazi sorunundan hareketle, Agamben’in yaşanmaya değmeyen hayat kavramını takdim ederek, Foucault’nun biyopolitika düşüncesindeki eksi[kli]ği, yani ölüm politikasını, tamamladığını ileri süreceğim.
