The interest of the young Brentano for the philosophy of Plato is linked to his Aristotelian studies. Brentano understands Aristotle’s philosophy in deep continuity with Plato’s one. This continuity is clear in one of the most controversial points of Brentano’s interpretation of Aristotle: the nature of God and the status of human soul. Brentano finds in both Plato and Aristotle a personal, monotheistic and creationistic God who also creates human soul, which is immortal. This approach is explained in some texts (...) from the youth of Brentano, although there are signs indicating that he sustained it until the end of his life. In his interpretation of Plato’s God, we see that Brentano identifies Him with the Idea of Good and the Demiurge. The Idea of Good would have even created the other Platonic Ideas, which should be understood as gods. (shrink)

Zusammenfassung Der vorliegende Aufsatz geht der Frage nach, aus welchen Gründen religiöse Aspekte im politischen Denken des Aristoteles – verglichen mit dem anderer zeitgenössischer Philosophen wie auch mit der politischen Praxis seiner Zeit – nicht prominent vertreten sind. Dabei beleuchtet er insbesondere den Umstand, dass Aristoteles der sozialintegrativen wie auch der identitätsstiftenden Funktion des Kultes im Hinblick auf die Polisgemeinschaft keine zentrale Bedeutung beimisst. Der Beitrag deutet dies auf dem Hintergrund der spezifischen Fragestellungen wie auch der politischen Prämissen des Philosophen, (...) darunter seine Fokussierung der Stasisproblematik und der Arm-Reich-Dichotomie. Angesichts dessen gelangt Aristoteles – abweichend von vielen seiner Zeitgenossen – zu der Einschätzung, dass sich soziale Kohäsion vorrangig durch das Austarieren konkurrierender Ansprüche fördern lässt, weniger durch Rekurse auf gemeinschaftsstiftende religiöse Vorstellungen oder kollektive Kultpraktiken. This article updates “The State of the Question in the Study of Plato” (Southern Journal of Philosophy, 1996) based on research covering the years from 1995–2015. Its three major parts examine: (1) how the mid‐twentieth‐century consensus has fared, (2) whether the new trends identified in that article have continued, and (3) identify trends either new or missed in the original article. On the whole, it shows the continuing decline of dogmatic and nondramatic Plato interpretation and the expansion and ramification of (...) the more literary, dramatic, and nondogmatic “new Platonism.” What was a growing insurgency twenty years ago can now be described as a, if not the, dominant approach. The following article reconstructs Plato’s argument for the existence of god in Laws X. The article starts with interpreting the argument for the priority of soul and continues with a discussion of the argumentation for rationality of the soul in charge of heavens . The view defended here is that Plato first defines the essential characteristics of the divine, namely self-motion and rationality, and then shows that there are entities which possess these characteristics and therefore deserve to be called gods (...) or divine. The article further shows that several sub-arguments mirror the structure of the overall proof. (shrink)

The aim of the present paper is to determine the Platonic treatment of image. For this purpose, the most relevant sections of four dialogues Republic, Sophist, Cratyilus and Phaedo are analyzed. Textual examination has contributed to detect a distinction that operates in Platonic treatment, namely the difference between 'appearance' and 'image'. While the former is an ontologically loss-making illusion, the latter assumes the role of sensible instantiation of the ideal-intelligible realities.
