  1. Crisis of Unequal Distribution of Wealth.Eileen Friederichs - 2024 - Social Philosophy Today 40:97-111.
Robert Nozick is most prominently known as the hero of the anti-taxation movement and chief libertarian. However, in his later writings he introduced a rule that could justify estate taxation of up to 100 percent, the subtraction rule. This paper shows that this subtraction rule is not only compatible with the core pillars of his entitlement theory, but also necessary for self-ownership from a strictly libertarian-individualistic point of view. As such, it deals with the compatibility of such estate taxation with (...)

  • Answering the Conventionalist Challenge to Natural Rights Theory.Billy Christmas - 2020 - Res Publica 27 (3):329-345.
Ben Bryan argues that the strongest challenge to natural rights theory is to explain how it overcomes the Problem of Authority. Given that our natural rights are multiply realisable by a range of equally reasonable social conventions, how or why ought one particular realisation have authority? I argue that Thomistic and Kantian solutions to this problem do not count as solutions from natural rights theory, and therefore offer my own solution. When theories of natural rights describe the rights we have (...)

  • Emergence as a Moral Theory: Reappraising Robert Nozick's Foundational Liberalism.John Meadowcroft - 2024 - Public Affairs Quarterly 38 (3):173-195.
This article argues that Robert Nozick's Anarchy, State, and Utopia has been widely misread as a crude defense of the inequalities of contemporary capitalist societies. Nozick's book was in fact a work of ideal theory that proposed an account of the emergence of the state as a new moral foundation for liberal thought and practice. Nozick believed a justification of the state derived from a hypothetical account of its emergence without violating anyone's rights was more plausible than the standard liberal (...)

  • On the Pragmatic Turn in Political Philosophy.Aeon J. Skoble - 2020 - Journal des Economistes Et des Etudes Humaines 26 (1).
Imagine some policy P about which a scholar said “The best way to help people escape from poverty would be P.” Is this a claim about political philosophy or economics? On the one hand, it seems to be an empirical statement, but there is a normative component as well. Besides the obvious normativity of “best,” there is the tacit implication that poverty is bad and that this is at least some reason to endorse P. But the fact that one can (...)

  • The Neoliberal Turn: Libertarian Justice and Public Policy.Billy Christmas - 2020 - Journal des Economistes Et des Etudes Humaines 26 (1).
In this paper I criticize a growing movement within public policy circles that self-identifies as neoliberal. The issue I take up here is the sense in which the neoliberal label signals a turn away from libertarian political philosophy. The are many import ant figures in this movement, but my focus here will be on Will Wilkinson of the Niskanen Center, not least because he has most prolifically written against libertarian political philosophy. Neoliberals oppose the idea that the rights that libertarianism (...)
