  1. Thinking in painting : Gilles Deleuze and the revolution from representation to abstraction.Judy Purdom - unknown
Reading with Gilles Deleuze, this thesis explores art as a production that abandons representation as a formation of identity in favour of an ontology of becoming. I argue that the move to abstraction in painting resonates with the aim of "thought without image" because it counters representation with a radical materiality that returns painting to the movement of matter. In order to situate Deleuze's thinking on art within a trajectory of a philosophy of becoming I open the thesis with a (...)

  • ‘Skin Portraiture’ in the Age of Bio Art: Bodily Boundaries, Technology and Difference in Contemporary Visual Culture.Heidi Kellett - 2018 - Body and Society 24 (1-2):137-165.
In this article, I consider ‘skin portraiture’: a mode of representation that privileges quasi-anonymous, fragmented, magnified and anatomized images of skin. I argue that this mode of representation permits a heightened awareness of embodied experiences such as reflexivity, empathy and relationality. Expanding understandings of difference through its engagement with haptic imagery and visuality, skin portraiture reorients the boundaries between ‘I’/‘not I’ and subject/object – often through touch – and challenges the cultural commitment to traditional notions of bodily autonomy. By doing (...)

  • Depictions of the human person: a multidisciplinary approach to teaching ethics for advanced practice nursing.David J. Carter, Mark De Vitis & Erol Dulagil - 2019 - International Journal of Ethics Education 5 (1):101-114.
Advanced practice nursing is an expanding field within many healthcare environments around the world. The scope and particular focus of an advanced practice nurse’s role is highly variable and thus the ethical challenges they face are equally diverse. Yet, the dominant existing ethics pedagogies used in the nursing context have been described as not fit-for-purpose. Existing pedagogies do not adequately prepare APN candidates to meet the ethical challenges they will encounter in practice. Applying an arts-based pedagogy in ethics education for (...)

  • Disability Life Writing and the Problem of Dependency in The Autobiography of Gaby Brimmer.Rachel Adams - 2017 - Journal of Medical Humanities 38 (1):39-50.
Independence was a core value of the movement for disability rights. People with disabilities did not have to be dependent, advocates claimed; they were robbed of autonomy by poverty, social prejudice, and architectural barriers. Recently, critics have noted that the emphasis on independence equates personhood with autonomy, reason, and self-awareness, thereby excluding those who are incapable of self-determination. The stigma of dependency is communicated to caregivers whose work is devalued and undercompensated. These values are echoed in the life writing of (...)

  • Researching the irrelevant and the invisible: Sexual diversity in the judiciary.Leslie J. Moran - 2009 - Feminist Theory 10 (3):281-294.
Early in the course of undertaking empirical research on the sexual diversity of the judiciary I had to address a particular challenge. Sexuality, I was repeatedly told, is not and ought not to be a difference that is taken into account. At best it ought to be disregarded or taken out of consideration. This generated a number of challenges for my research. How do you research and make sense of sexuality as a difference that key informants assert is absent or (...)
