  1. Husserl, Schutz, “paul” and me: Reflections on writing phenomenology. [REVIEW]Valerie Malhotra Bentz - 1995 - Human Studies 18 (1):41 - 62.
This paper is a reflection on the boundaries of academic discourse as I came to be acutely aware of them while attempting to teach a graduate seminar in qualitative research methods. The purpose of the readings in Husserl and Schutz and the writing exercises was to assist students trained in quantitative methods and steeped in positivistic assumptions about research to write phenomenological descriptions of lived experience. Paul could not write the assigned papers due to a diagnosed writing disability but he (...)

  • Criticism and conversational texts: Rhetorical bases of role, audience, and style in the Buber-Rogers dialogue. [REVIEW]Rob Anderson & Kenneth N. Cissna - 1996 - Human Studies 19 (1):85 - 118.
This essay describes conversation as an ensemble accomplishment that can be illuminated by critics working with specific texts within a rhetorical framework. We first establish dialogue as the key concept for any criticism of conversation, specifying the rhetorical dimensions of interpersonal dialogue. Second, we show how template thinking is particularly dangerous for conversational critics and suggest a research (anti)method, based on a coauthorship, that provides a thoroughgoing dialogical access to texts. Finally, we exemplify dialogic criticism of a conversational text by (...)

This book contains 20 essays tracing the work of David Zarefsky, a leading North American scholar of argumentation from a rhetorical perspective. The essays cohere around 4 general themes: objectives for studying argumentation rhetorically, approaches to rhetorical study of argumentation, patterns and schemes of rhetorical argumentation, and case studies illustrating the potential of studying argumentation rhetorically. These articles are drawn from across Zarefsky’s 45-year career. Many of these articles originally appeared in publications that are difficult to access today, and this (...)

  • Languaging, human projects, selves, and societies of selves.Paul J. Thibault - forthcoming - Critical Discourse Studies.
Focusing on the self as a normative construct, I consider how and why the self, not the group, is ontologically fundamental. Selves live in communities or societies of selves. The intrinsic normativity of the self and the actions the self performs constitute the grounds on which people fashion coherent narratives about themselves and seek to display themselves to others in ways that conform to their narratives. People bond with, care for, and invest in each other as distinctive selves that they (...)

  • Fisuras retóricas. Ironía, analogía y conocimiento lingüístico.Amadeu Viana - 2001 - Cuadernos Sobre Vico 13 (14):233-251.
