This essay describes conversation as an ensemble accomplishment that can be illuminated by critics working with specific texts within a rhetorical framework. We first establish dialogue as the key concept for any criticism of conversation, specifying the rhetorical dimensions of interpersonal dialogue. Second, we show how template thinking is particularly dangerous for conversational critics and suggest a research (anti)method, based on a coauthorship, that provides a thoroughgoing dialogical access to texts. This book contains 20 essays tracing the work of David Zarefsky, a leading North American scholar of argumentation from a rhetorical perspective. The essays cohere around 4 general themes: objectives for studying argumentation rhetorically, approaches to rhetorical study of argumentation, patterns and schemes of rhetorical argumentation, and case studies illustrating the potential of studying argumentation rhetorically. These articles are drawn from across Zarefsky’s 45-year career. Many of these articles originally appeared in publications that are difficult to access today, and this (...) collection brings the reader up to date on the topic. Zarefsky’s scholarship focuses on the role of language in political argumentation, the ways in which argumentation creates public knowledge and belief, the influence of framing and context on what is said and understood, the deployment of particular patterns and schemes of argumentation in public reasoning, and the influence of debate on politics and governance. All these topics are addressed in this book. Each of the conceptual essays includes brief application to specific cases, and five extended case studies are also presented in this volume. Focusing on the self as a normative construct, I consider how and why the self, not the group, is ontologically fundamental. Selves live in communities or societies of selves. The intrinsic normativity of the self and the actions the self performs constitute the grounds on which people fashion coherent narratives about themselves and seek to display themselves to others in ways that conform to their narratives. People bond with, care for, and invest in each other as distinctive selves that they (...) can coordinate with in a vast range of different activities and practices together with the conflicts and tensions between these activities and practices that define their political nature. The persistence or otherwise of the activities and projects that selves participate in is dependent on other activities and practices that lend their support and cooperation (or otherwise) to them. Activities and projects are therefore interdependent in ways that are more or less democratic. Selves-in-activities actively maintain, contest, and change these activities and projects. Political activity is thus seen as the processes of maintaining, contesting, and changing both selves-in-activities and the relations between activities. (shrink)

El presente trabajo plantea el sentido y el uso de los retruécanos tomados como parte del conocimiento lingüístico, tratando de reconstruir desde ese punto de partida el yugo viquiano de los saberes , y dotando de contenido el lado filológico. El trabajo destaca aportaciones contemporáneas congeniales con el planteamiento viquiano, e insiste particularmente en el significado de la ironía y en las analogías como construcciones retóricas del conocimiento lingüístico. Entre las conclusiones, cabe señalar las consecuencias que se derivan de una (...) interpretación radical del contacto entre literatura y discurso.The present paper discusses the meaning and use of puns considered as part of linguistic knowledge. It starts from the Viquian bond of learning, i.e. philosphy and philology, trying to give dimensions and content to the philological side. In this spirit, the paper refers to different contemporary approaches that match the Vichian program. Particularly, this paper defends irony and play as rhetorical devices and analogy as a parallel form of creativity. On of the conclusions appeals to the consequences we may infer form a radical interpretation of the contact between literature and discourse. (shrink)
