  1. Parent–Child Roles in Decision Making About Medical Research.Victoria A. Miller, William W. Reynolds & Robert M. Nelson - 2008 - Ethics and Behavior 18 (2-3):161 – 181.
Our objective is to understand how parents and children perceive their roles in decision making about research participation. Forty-five children (ages 4-15 years) with or without a chronic condition and 21 parents were the participants. A semistructured interview assessed perceptions of up to 4 hypothetical research scenarios with varying levels of risk, benefit, and complexity. Children were also administered the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Third Edition, to assess verbal ability, as a proxy for the child's cognitive development. The audiotaped interviews (...)

  • A goodness-of-fit approach to informed consent for pediatric intervention research.Jessica Masty & Celia Fisher - 2008 - Ethics and Behavior 18 (2-3):139 – 160.
As children and adolescents receive increased research attention, ethical issues related to obtaining informed consent for pediatric intervention research have come into greater focus. In this article, we conceptualize parent permission and child assent within a goodness-of-fit framework that encourages investigators to create consent procedures “fitted” to the research context, the child's cognitive and emotional maturity, and the family system. Drawing on relevant literature and a hypothetical case example, we highlight four factors investigators may consider when constructing consent procedures that (...)

  • Decision Making in Paediatric Care: an overview with reference to nursing care.Inger Hallström & Gunnel Elander - 2005 - Nursing Ethics 12 (3):223-238.
The purpose of this overview of published articles on decision making in paediatric care was to identify important aspects of its possible use in clinical practice and to obtain a base for future research. A literature review was undertaken utilizing snowball sampling to identify articles because of the diversity present within the area of decision making in paediatric care. The databases PubMed and CINAHL were used. The search was limited to articles published in English during the period 1994-2004. The analysis (...)

  • PAeDS-MoRe: A framework for the development and review of research assent protocols involving children and adolescents.Marissa Constand, Nadia Tanel & Stephen E. Ryan - 2015 - Research Ethics 11 (1):15-38.
We systematically reviewed contemporary literature to create an evidence-informed framework for research studies involving children and adolescents who can assent to participate. We searched seven citation indices to locate peer-reviewed research published in English language journals between 2000 and 2012. After screening 1,231 titles and abstracts for relevance, we assessed levels of evidence, extracted information, and analysed content from 87 articles. Most articles narrowly focused on paediatric assent barriers and facilitators for decision-making about research participation. No articles provided a single, (...)
