  1. Space, Time and the Constitution of Subjectivity: Comparing Elias and Foucault.Paddy Dolan - 2010 - Foucault Studies 8:8-27.
The work of Foucault and Elias has been compared before in the social sciences and humanities, but here I argue that the main distinction between their approaches to the construction of subjectivity is the relative importance of space and time in their accounts. This is not just a matter of the “history of ideas,” as providing for the temporal dimension more fully in theories of subjectivity and the habitus allows for a greater understanding of how ways of being, acting and (...)

  • Contract or coincidence: George Herbert Mead and Adam Smith on self and society.Timothy M. Costelloe - 1997 - History of the Human Sciences 10 (2):81-109.
Although a number of commentators have remarked upon the simi larities between aspects of George Herbert Mead's social psychology and Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments, there has been no sys tematic attempt to document the connection. This article attempts to do precisely that. First, the legitimacy of the connection is established by showing the likelihood that Mead knew this particular work by Smith, and by bringing together the various treatments of the matter made by commentators. Since Mead himself does (...)

  • Developing a Sociological Model for Researching Women’s Self and Social Identities.Anne Byrne - 2003 - European Journal of Women's Studies 10 (4):443-464.
This paper presents an empirical model for researching women’s self and social identities. The model was devised as a theoretical and methodological framework to assist the author to recognize self-identity and social identity in single women’s narratives of their lives. Self-identity is understood as our own sense of ourselves as persons while social identity is categorizations of us by others. For those interested in researching the consequences of strong ideologies on women’s identities, or for recognizing resistance and understanding the development (...)

  • Prosthetic tim/ing: selfhood and ethics amidst technological rationality.Matthew Surch - unknown
This masters thesis examines the interplay between ethics and selfhood amidst contemporary technological rationality. I use personal everyday photography as a foil in my analysis of the ways in which temporality is both constitutive of consciousness and the subject of practices of domestication via technics. In chapter one, I define personal everyday photography, address the two interconnected registers of selfhood, and advance an argument for mindfulness. In chapter two, I assess the ethical aspects of memory, temporality and thinking as they (...)

  • Am I Still Ethical? the socially-mediated process of nurses' moral identity.Gweneth A. Hartrick Doane - 2002 - Nursing Ethics 9 (6):623-635.
In a recent, currently unpublished, research project that sought to examine the meaning and enactment of ethical nursing practice across a variety of clinical settings, the significance of moral identity was highlighted. This article describes the findings and illuminates how the moral identities of the nurse participants arose and evolved as they navigated their way through the contextual and systemic forces that shaped the moral situations of their practice. The study revealed the socially-mediated process of identity development and the narrative, (...)
