  1. Extending Lambek grammars to basic categorial grammars.Wojciech Buszkowski - 1996 - Journal of Logic, Language and Information 5 (3-4):279-295.
Pentus (1992) proves the equivalence of LCG's and CFG's, and CFG's are equivalent to BCG's by the Gaifman theorem (Bar-Hillel et al., 1960). This paper provides a procedure to extend any LCG to an equivalent BCG by affixing new types to the lexicon; a procedure of that kind was proposed as early, as Cohen (1967), but it was deficient (Buszkowski, 1985). We use a modification of Pentus' proof and a new proof of the Gaifman theorem on the basis of the (...)

  • The Multiplicative-Additive Lambek Calculus with Subexponential and Bracket Modalities.Max Kanovich, Stepan Kuznetsov & Andre Scedrov - 2021 - Journal of Logic, Language and Information 30 (1):31-88.
We give a proof-theoretic and algorithmic complexity analysis for systems introduced by Morrill to serve as the core of the CatLog categorial grammar parser. We consider two recent versions of Morrill’s calculi, and focus on their fragments including multiplicative (Lambek) connectives, additive conjunction and disjunction, brackets and bracket modalities, and the! subexponential modality. For both systems, we resolve issues connected with the cut rule and provide necessary modifications, after which we prove admissibility of cut (cut elimination theorem). We also prove (...)

  • Complexity of the Infinitary Lambek Calculus with Kleene Star.Stepan Kuznetsov - 2021 - Review of Symbolic Logic 14 (4):946-972.
We consider the Lambek calculus, or noncommutative multiplicative intuitionistic linear logic, extended with iteration, or Kleene star, axiomatised by means of an$\omega $-rule, and prove that the derivability problem in this calculus is$\Pi _1^0$-hard. This solves a problem left open by Buszkowski (2007), who obtained the same complexity bound for infinitary action logic, which additionally includes additive conjunction and disjunction. As a by-product, we prove that any context-free language without the empty word can be generated by a Lambek grammar with (...)

  • The Lambek calculus enriched with additional connectives.Makoto Kanazawa - 1992 - Journal of Logic, Language and Information 1 (2):141-171.
Some formal properties of enriched systems of Lambek calculus with analogues of conjunction and disjunction are investigated. In particular, it is proved that the class of languages recognizable by the Lambek calculus with added intersective conjunction properly includes the class of finite intersections of context-free languages.

  • Gaifman's theorem on categorial grammars revisited.Wojciech Buszkowski - 1988 - Studia Logica 47 (1):23 - 33.
The equivalence of (classical) categorial grammars and context-free grammars, proved by Gaifman [4], is a very basic result of the theory of formal grammars (an essentially equivalent result is known as the Greibach normal form theorem [1], [14]). We analyse the contents of Gaifman's theorem within the framework of structure and type transformations. We give a new proof of this theorem which relies on the algebra of phrase structures and exhibit a possibility to justify the key construction used in Gaifman's (...)

  • Lambek grammars with one division and one primitive type.Stepan Kuznetsov - 2012 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 20 (1):207-221.
We prove that a formal language without the empty word is context-free if and only if it is generated by some L-grammar, where L is the Lambek calculus with one division and one primitive type. To do that, we use a substitution of types which reduces derivability in L to derivability in L. We also prove that a formal language is context-free if and only if it is generated by some L*-grammar is a variant of L that allows empty premises). (...)
