  1. R.S. Peters' 'The justification of education' revisited.Stefaan E. Cuypers - 2012 - Ethics and Education 7 (1):3 - 17.
In his 1973 paper ?The Justification of Education? R.S. Peters aspired to give a non-instrumental justification of education. Ever since, his so-called ?transcendental argument? has been under attack and most critics conclude that it does not work. They have, however, thrown the baby away with the bathwater, when they furthermore concluded that Peters? justificatory project itself is futile. This article takes another look at Peters? justificatory project. As against a Kantian interpretation, it proposes an axiological-perfectionist interpretation to bring out the (...)

  • Why the Aims of Education Cannot Be Settled.Atli Harðarson - 2012 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 46 (2):223-235.
The dominant model of curriculum design in the last century assumed that school education could be organized around aims, defined primarily in terms of students' behaviour. The credentials of this model were questioned by, among others, Lawrence Stenhouse, who pointed out that education serves purposes that cannot be stated in terms of behavioural objectives. In this article, I offer support for Stenhouse's conclusion and go beyond it, showing that if education aims at critical understanding of its own value, then it (...)

  • (1 other version)Vocational and Civic Education: Whither British Policy?Christopher Winch - 2012 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 46 (4):603-618.
The current crisis in British VET (Vocational Education and Training) is explained in terms of the decline of opportunities beyond preparation for university for young people after school. The continuing large numbers of ‘NEETS’ (those not in employment, education or training) is but one aspect of this problem: much larger is the decline in good quality VET opportunities for those who do not intend to go to university. A very important element in the problem is a misunderstanding of the relationship (...)

  • Literature, Rival Conceptions of Virtue, and Moral Education.David Carr - 2017 - Journal of Aesthetic Education 51 (2):1-16.
On an increasingly popular ethical perspective, to become a moral agent is to acquire qualities of virtuous character as broadly conceived in a tradition going back to Aristotle.1 For Aristotle, however, since the acquisition of such qualities is not merely a matter of coming to behave in a prescribed way but of acquiring capacities for deliberation and judgment about what is morally required in variable circumstances, virtuous agency is also significantly a matter of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. So how do (...)

  • Venture in/between ethics, education and literary media: making cases for dialogic communities of ethical enquiry.Kenny Colm - 2017 - Dissertation, Dublin City University
The thesis contends that education and literary studies can make a valuable contribution to ethics and ethical development of persons, their relations with others and with the world. It promotes an approach to ethics education through dialogic enquiry based on theories and practices associated with comparative literature and philosophical enquiry. These involve students sharing experiences and meanings as they participate in interpretive communities and communities of philosophical enquiry. There are two main components to the research: ethically focused studies of literary (...)
