  • The Pragmatics of Multi-Verb Sequences: The Case of the Verb Go.Noriko Matsumoto - 2010 - Lodz Papers in Pragmatics 6 (1):117-143.
The Pragmatics of Multi-Verb Sequences: The Case of the Verb Go This paper is an empirical investigation into the nature of multi-verb sequences in English. Multi-verb sequences such as V-to-VP and V-and-VP present a natural construction type of investigating recurring patterns of event sequences as conceived situations. This paper focuses on the image-schematic properties of both the go-to-VP construction and the go-and-VP construction to which previous accounts have paid little attention, and it demonstrates that the interpretation of the image-schemas has (...)

  • Bottlenose dolphins understand relationships between concepts.Louis M. Herman, Robert K. Uyeyama & Adam A. Pack - 2008 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 31 (2):139-140.
We dispute Penn et al.'s claim of the sharp functional discontinuity between humans and nonhumans with evidence in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) of higher-order generalizations: spontaneous integration of previously learned rules and concepts in response to novel stimuli. We propose that species-general explanations that are in approach are more plausible than Penn et al.'s innatist approach of a genetically prespecified supermodule.

  • Macbeth Revisited: A Cognitive Analysis.M. A. Sandra Peña Cervel - 2010 - Metaphor and Symbol 26 (1):1-22.
Cognitive Stylistics or Poetics has emerged as a powerful framework for the analysis of literary works due to the fact that it provides us with tools stemming from bodily experience which aim at universality. This proposal attempts to shed additional light on the analysis of the characters and settings carried out by Freeman (1995) by making use of some recent developments within the framework of Cognitive Linguistics, especially in connection with metonymy and image-schemas. It lends further support to the thesis (...)

  • Metaphor and Coupling: An Embodied, Action-Oriented Perspective.Norman Y. Teng - 2006 - Metaphor and Symbol 21 (2):67-85.
This study offers an embodied, action-oriented perspective on metaphor. It weaves together 3 theoretical ideas: (a) Lakoff & Johnson's (1980a, 1980b, 1980c; Lakoff, 1993) idea that metaphors are cross-domain conceptual mappings, (b) Lakoff & Johnson's (1999) idea that individuals are coupled to the world through embodied interactions with the environment, on which their sense of what is real is based, and (c) Gibbs's (1999) nascent idea that metaphors can be off-loaded into the cultural world. I argue that metaphors, as cross-domain (...)

  • Levels of metaphor in gesture.Tomasz Dyrmo - 2023 - Pragmatics and Cognition 30 (2):330-352.
The present contribution integrates a recent, multilevel approach to metaphor advanced by Kövecses (2017 and later publications), with gestures as a mode of metaphorical expression. In doing so, the paper shows how different elements of conceptual structure, varying from the abstract, recurring image schema, through more complex conceptual domains and frames, to contextually embedded and variable metaphorical scenarios, participate in the metaphoricity of gestures. This application of gestures to the multilevel approach lends direct support to the idea that human conceptual (...)

The article focuses on meaning generation in music and language cognition based on complexes of image schemas. We hypothesize that schemas are involved in dynamic interactions fostering online complex conceptual construction found both in language and elsewhere in various cognitive code expressions. Expanding on recent work, we propose that an account of image-schema interaction should include the notion of scalarity, a higher-order parameter which captures the intensity with which schemas occur and/or interact with one another. In that sense, schemas are (...)
