  1. Putting the Agent into Research in Black and Minority Ethnic Entrepreneurship: A New Methodological Proposal.Jean Gardiner, Rob Wapshott & Steve Vincent - 2014 - Journal of Critical Realism 13 (4):368-384.
This paper considers what realist social theory can add to existing knowledge about black and minority ethnic entrepreneurs and outlines a methodology for exploring the role of the BME entrepreneur. For this group, embodied signifiers such as skills and abilities, cultural characteristics, social norms, and value systems combine with structural antecedents, such as financial, contractual, professional, and other national and regional institutional arrangements to create impediments on the progression of BME enterprises. Understanding such complex social arrangements presents significant ontological and (...)

  • Marketing systems: critical realist interventions towards better theorizing.Hamish Simmonds & Aaron Gazley - 2018 - Journal of Critical Realism 17 (2):140-159.
Marketing systems research has the potential to contribute to the well-being of individuals, communities and our environment but we need to ensure that we do not mechanistically apply inadequate approaches. This article identifies tensions and limitations within the developing marketing systems theory and literature. Using the tools of critical realism, we aim to critique the omissions in the metatheory of marketing systems research and then put forward CR to reconstruct a more comprehensive basis for the development of marketing systems theory. • Critical realism, psychology and the legacies of psychoanalysis.David Pilgrim - 2017 - Journal of Critical Realism 16 (5):468-482.
The discipline of psychology has been poorly represented in critical realist texts to date. This is despite Bhaskar’s use of psychoanalytical concepts to underpin his concept of the dialectic. By comparison, other aspects of social science, such as sociology and economics, have a well-established body of critical realist texts. The original approach to psychoanalysis was analogous to the critical realist ontological-axiological chain. It moved from an ontological problem to an axiological solution. Freud’s eagerness to reframe psychoanalysis within a scientistic, objective (...)

  • A Critical Realist Perspective on Decisions Involving Risk and Uncertainty.Rob Ranyard - 2014 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 45 (1):3-11.
The relevance to decision research of recent advances in the philosophy of social science is considered. The critical realism of Roy Bhaskar argues for the identification of contextually contingent explanatory mechanisms at multiple levels based on concepts grounded in intersubjectively shared reality. Using examples from the author’s and other’s research on the psychology of decisions involving risk and uncertainty, this paper explores the implications of taking a critical realist approach. It is argued that critical realism has the potential to advance (...)
