  1. The expressive dimension of interpersonal coordination and collaborative remembering.Himmbler Olivares & Carlos Cornejo - 2020 - Pragmatics Cognition 27 (2):500-528.
While individuals interact, they coordinate their feelings and emotions. They also coordinate several kinds of expression while interacting, like facial expressions and gestures. Inspired by Karl Bühler’s Organon model and Henri Bergson’s description of remembering experiences, we explore interpersonal coordination during a collaborative remembering task between two people. We present a case study of one dyad employing videography to identify and distinguish two types of spontaneous interpersonal coordination. In a later stage, separate interviews of both participants are analyzed to establish (...)

  • Understanding human encounters goes beyond explaining musculoskeletal coordination: a review.David Carré & Carlos Cornejo - 2022 - Cognition and Emotion 36 (8):1479-1484.
Complex systems theory has become one of the main frameworks to understand, model and explain interactional phenomena such as interpersonal coordination. In her paper, Butler (this issue) applies this approach to theorise about coordination at large, including human interactions. We argue that the all-encompassing language of complex systems theory leads to overemphasising the physical aspects that human interactions share with other coordinated systems in nature. This emphasis ultimately disregards the meaningful dimension implied in any human movement, understanding it as mechanical (...)

  • Toward a multimodal and continuous approach of infant-adult interactions.Marianne Jover & Maya Gratier - 2023 - Interaction Studies 24 (1):5-47.
Adult-infant early dyadic interactions have been extensively explored by developmental psychologists. Around the age of 2 months, infants already demonstrate complex, delicate and very sensitive behaviors that seem to express their ability to interact and share emotions with their caregivers. This paper presents 3 pilot studies of parent-infant dyadic interaction in various set-ups. The first two present longitudinal data collected on two infants aged between 1 and 6 months and their mothers. We analyzed the development of coordination between them, at (...)

  • (1 other version)Beyond Stereotypes: Analyzing Gender and Cultural Differences in Nonverbal Rapport.Gary Bente, Eric Novotny, Daniel Roth & Ahmad Al-Issa - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
The current paper addresses two methodological problems pertinent to the analysis of observer studies in nonverbal rapport and beyond. These problems concern: the production of standardized stimulus materials that allow for unbiased observer ratings and the objective measurement of nonverbal behaviors to identify the dyadic patterns underlying the observer impressions. We suggest motion capture and character animation as possible solutions to these problems and exemplarily apply the novel methodology to the study of gender and cultural differences in nonverbal rapport. We (...)
