The Pragmatics of Multi-Verb Sequences: The Case of the Verb Go This paper is an empirical investigation into the nature of multi-verb sequences in English. Multi-verb sequences such as V-to-VP and V-and-VP present a natural construction type of investigating recurring patterns of event sequences as conceived situations. This paper focuses on the image-schematic properties of both the go-to-VP construction and the go-and-VP construction to which previous accounts have paid little attention, and it demonstrates that the interpretation of the image-schemas has (...) enhanced research. The go-to-VP and the go-and-VP constructions require different image schemas. With respect to the go-to-VP construction, the SOURCE-PATH-GOAL schema plays an important role; sometimes a compound image schema of that type are necessary. Specifically, the image-schematic properties of the first verb go are incorporated into the event structure of the second verb to allow the speaker to construe the event denoted by the second verb in accordance with the image-schematic meaning of the first verb go. Consequently, this paper offers a pragmatic and cognitive account of the two constructions respectively. Some results in a data-driven analysis in this paper also reinforce selected convincing explanations. (shrink)

We approach the semantics of prepositions from the perspective of conceptual spaces. Focusing on purely spatial locative and directional prepositions, we analyze both types of prepositions in terms of polar coordinates instead of Cartesian coordinates. This makes it possible to demonstrate that the property of convexity holds quite generally in the domain of prepositions of location and direction, supporting the important role that this property plays in conceptual spaces.

Most research on image schema examined the meaning configuration of words connotation. However, previous studies of adjectives are meaningful in cognitive linguistics because they provide insight into how those adjectives are involved with psychological movement. In this sense, from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, one’s conceptualization and cognition are closely associated with their bodily experience and surroundings; adjectives are no exception. The varieties of transformations of image schemas lay the foundation for the conception and perception. Accordingly, this study is an (...) investigation into the perception of adjectives and psychological activities associated with image schema. Data in this study come from adjectives in the novel The Great Gatsby, which were tagged and calculated with the help of software Python and the NLTK package. The results demonstrate that a significant amount of adjectives were used in the novel. Moreover, Nick’s psychological activities changed significantly from the SOURCE to the DESTINATION schematic stage, which is uncovered by his expression of adjectives. Finally, the results further suggest that transformations of image schema as BALANCE, CONTAINER, and PATH work together to motivate one’s linguistic expression of adjectives. The present findings have several implications for research on lexicons and literacy interpretation from cognitive linguistics. (shrink)

Les avantages et les inconvénients des traits dans les ressemblances de famille qui décrivent les relations spatiales sont évalués dans cet article. La relation porteur/porté, décrite par x est sur y, et la relation de suspension, décrite par x pend à y,sont choisies comme exemples. Les relations P/p et S sont décrites par des traits ou des valeurs qui déterminent comment le porteur supporte le porté ; le type de contact entre le porteur et le porté ; et la position (...) relative du porteur et du porté sur l’axe vertical. Chaque situation dans le monde qui est décrite par x est sur y ou par x pend à y peut être caractérisée par une combinaison de trois valeurs des dimensions W, C et H. Ces ensembles de combinaisons sont appelés famille de ressemblance P/p et famille de ressemblance S. Selon une première interprétation de ces familles de ressemblances, les ensembles de combinaisons qui les déterminent seraient délimités en considérant isolément chaque valeur, indépendamment de la situation globale qu’elles représentent. Pour atteindre ce but, des approches basées sur les probabilités attribuent différents index de représentativité à chaque valeur dans chaque catégorie. Si cette interprétation analytique s’avérait exacte, les familles de ressemblance constitueraient un dernier refuge pour les traits sémantiques de la linguistique structuraliste. L’article démontre l’échec de l’interprétation analytique des ressemblances de famille. Bien que, linguistiquement, elle permette une description exhaustive des expressions être sur et pendre à, il est peu plausible que, psychologiquement, les catégories P/p et S soient complètement déterminées en additionnant isolément les poids des valeurs des combinaisons. Selon une seconde interprétation des familles de ressemblance P/p et S, les locuteurs se basent sur une reconnaissance globale des similarités entre les situations décrites par être sur et pendre à. Dans cette interprétation globale des ressemblances de famille P/p et S, les valeurs ne sont pas traitées indépendamment et la maîtrise de ces catégories dépend étroitement de notre expérience du monde.
