  1. The Limits of Hospitality: Political Philosophy, Undocumented Migration and the Local Arena.Heidrun Friese - 2010 - European Journal of Social Theory 13 (3):323-341.
How to hospitably welcome refugees and migrants presents urgent questions for social and political thought. Current debates can be attributed to three discursive fields. Liberal versions hold that there are good reasons for political and legal limits of hospitality, critical perspectives advocate a renewed cosmopolitanism and, finally, deconstructive perspectives focus on the demand of unconditional hospitality as an absolute ethical requirement. These concepts trouble the conventional congruence of citizenship and bounded territory that make up modern nation states, on the one (...)

  • (1 other version)The patronising Kantianisms of hospitality ethics in International Relations: Towards a politics of imposition.Mark F. N. Franke - 2021 - Journal of International Political Theory 17 (3):276-294.
The contemporary international regime of law and politics regarding human migration largely follows Immanuel Kant’s contradictory approach, supporting the cosmopolitical rights of humans to move and expect hospitality while privileging the rights of sovereign states to assert territorial security against movement. International Relations scholars informed by Jacques Derrida’s ethical theory argue that one may press this tension to positive dynamics through affirmation of the aporia that a secured home is a requirement for the possibility of the hospitality that might undo (...)

  • Spatializing Difference beyond Cosmopolitanism: Rethinking Planetary Futures.Tariq Jazeel - 2011 - Theory, Culture and Society 28 (5):75-97.
This paper develops a critical engagement with ‘cosmopolitanism’ and specifically the geographical imaginations it implicates. It does so in order to work through some of the geographical closures in the new cosmopolitanism literature and, further, to suggest alternative — more uncertain and speculative — spatial imaginations for modes of living together with radical alterity. The paper is written in the context of the wealth of recent literature that has sought to recuperate cosmopolitanism as a progressive political philosophy and imagination. Part (...)

  • Educational Hospitality and Trust in Teacher–Student Relationships: A Derridarian Visiting.Ruyu Hung - 2013 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 32 (1):87-99.
This paper explores the meaning of teacher–student relationships in the light of Derrida’s notions of hospitality and trust. Drawing on Derrida, the author delineates two aspects of educational hospitality: hospitality without determinacy and hospitality as self-surrender. It is argued that educational hospitality is underpinned by trust. A sound teacher–student relationship, the paper concludes, consists in educational hospitality and embedded trust.
