The myth of judgment in the final pages of Plato’s Gorgias has left more than one of its readers puzzled, a standpoint that is especially true in regards of the way that the punishment reserved to the unjust souls in Hades has been interpreted. In this paper, we shall see that the specific function of the punishment in the final myth of Plato’s Gorgias is to offer a metaphor of the effects of refutation upon the soul. For such a claim, (...) we intend to show that punishment itself is modelled by means of an analogy with medicine which structures the Dialogue as a whole. After we have observed how Socrates introduce this analogy inside the myth by using nudity as a criterion of the evaluation of the soul, we shall analyze how the punishment itself is characterized. In the end, if we can assert that punishment reflects the use of refutation, it is because the pain it causes is analogous to the shame that one who disposes of the wrong beliefs experiences after being refuted. Centré sur le Gorgias de Platon, cet article vise à montrer que la critique platonicienne de la rhétorique ne s’élabore pas sur la base d’une hostilité de principe à l’égard du rhéteur, mais se développe au contraire à partir du discours rhétorique lui-même. Nous analysons d’abord les difficultés de l’analogie posant la rhétorique comme un simulacre de la justice : cette analogie révèle en fait la façon dont Gorgias cherche à manifester la singularité et la valeur de son enseignement. Nous (...) examinons ensuite les principales étapes de la discussion entre Socrate et Gorgias, qui se focalise progressivement sur l’usage spécifiquement judiciaire de la rhétorique, pour montrer, dans un dernier temps, en quoi l’interrogation platonicienne sur la justice reprend la réflexion de Gorgias sur le sujet, en la radicalisant. Le discours socratique est toujours présenté par Platon comme cause d’effets affectifs : il bouleverse, provoque la colère ou la honte, donnant ainsi l’impression aux interlocuteurs du philosophe d’être ensorcelés par lui. C’est seulement par ce biais qu’il agit aussi sur la partie rationnelle de l’âme, en modifiant éventuellement ses opinions. La raison en est qu’il cherche à influer, non pas sur la partie rationnelle de l’âme, mais sur l’âme tout entière : les opinions dépendent en effet de l’ensemble de (...) la structure psychique, donc des rapports entre les différentes parties de l’âme. Seit Dodds’ Anwendung des Begriffs „Schamkultur“ auf die griechische Kultur genießt das Thema Scham die besondere Aufmerksamkeit der Gräzisten. Basierend auf einer detaillierten Analyse der relevanten Belegstellen im gesamten platonischen Corpus und einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit den vorherigen einschlägigen Forschungen, versucht die vorliegende Arbeit Platons Konzeption der Scham systematisch zu erläutern, und zwar thematisch unter den folgenden vier Perspektiven: dem sokratischen elenchos, der Wahrheitsliebe, dem Moralverständnis sowie der Moralerziehung im Staat. Die Studie zielt einerseits darauf ab, aufzuzeigen, dass Platons Verständnis (...) von Scham nicht so unreif ist, wie man bislang dachte; andererseits möchte sie vor Augen führen, dass Platon Scham nicht, wie traditionell angenommen, als nur negativ erachtet, sondern ihre positive Rolle in verschiedenen Gebieten durchaus anerkennt. Es wird gezeigt, dass Scham und die ihr verwandten Emotionen von Bedeutung sowohl für den platonischen Sokrates als auch für die platonische Philosophie im Ganzen sind, auch wenn der Begriff „Schamkultur“ wohl keine zutreffende Bezeichnung für seine Zeit darstellt.
