  1. Singular Thoughts and Singular Propositions.Joshua Armstrong & Jason Stanley - 2011 - Philosophical Studies 154 (2):205 - 222.
A singular thought about an object o is one that is directly about o in a characteristic way—grasp of that thought requires having some special epistemic relation to the object o, and the thought is ontologically dependent on o. One account of the nature of singular thought exploits a Russellian Structured Account of Propositions, according to which contents are represented by means of structured n-tuples of objects, properties, and functions. A proposition is singular, according to this framework, if and only (...)

  • Leo Strauss: on modern democracy, technology, and liberal education.Timothy Burns - 2021 - Albany: State University of New York Press.
Liberal democracy is today under unprecedented attack from both the left and the right. Offering a fresh and penetrating examination of how Leo Strauss understood the emergence of liberal democracy and what is necessary to sustain and elevate it, Leo Strauss on Modern Democracy, Technology, and Liberal Education explores Strauss' view of the intimate (and troubling) relation between the philosophic promotion of liberal democracy and the turn to the modern scientific-technological project of the 'conquest of nature'. Timothy W. Burns explicates (...)

  • A Typology of Moral Conversion.Alfredo Mac Laughlin - 2009 - Lonergan Workshop 23:275-306.
This paper expands on the notion of "moral conversion" (advanced by Bernard Lonergan but underdeveloped in his work) by developing a typology that uses two "cross-hatching" criteria. First, it distinguishes between moral conversions that have to do with a person's relation to moral obligation, good and evil, and between moral conversions that have to do with how a person regards the question of happiness and the meaning of life. Secondly, it distinguishes between conversions regarding the _content_ (what is good/evil or (...)

  • The sudden rise of French existentialism: a case-study in the sociology of intellectual life. [REVIEW]Patrick Baert - 2011 - Theory and Society 40 (6):619-644.
This article offers a new explanation for the sudden rise in popularity of French existentialism, in particular of Sartre’s version, in the mid-1940s. It develops a multidimensional account that recognizes both structural and cultural factors. The explanation differs from, and more fully addresses the complexity of the situation than, the two most prominent existing explanations: namely Anna Boschetti’s Bourdieu-inspired account and Randall Collins’s network-based approach. It is argued that, because of specific socio-political circumstances, the intellectual establishment became tainted and lost (...)

The position of intellectuals in democracies is intrinsically problematic. They have to claim that what they say and do is true and reasonable. But within the democratic process their opinions have the same status as those of any other citizen. However, they can find a legitimate way to influence political decision-making as experts and interpreters of cultural contexts. Therefore, they have an important responsibility in defending open debate and open societies.

  • Angst and Philosophy: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Investigation.David Kelly Coe - 1981 - Dissertation, University of Hawai'i
This essay seeks to explore the meaning and significance of Angst from the standpoint of hermeneutic phenomenology. Employing a five chapter structure, the essay investigates this phenomenon from two modes of hermeneutic inquiry: what we have called the "macro-" and the "micro-" approaches to hermeneutics. ;Chapter I traces the development of our ground phenomenon, "primordial Angst," from 6000 BCE to the time of Jacob Boehme. In doing so we attempted to uncover four facets of primordial Angst, facets we termed "onto-theological (...)

  • Interaction as existential practice : An explorative study of Mark C. Taylor’s philosophical project and its potential consequences for Human-Computer Interaction.Henrik Åhman - unknown
This thesis discusses the potential consequences of applying the philosophy of Mark C. Taylor to the field of Human-Computer Interaction. The first part of the thesis comprises a study focusing on two discursive trends in contemporary HCI, materiality and the self, and how these discourses describe interaction. Through a qualitative, inductive content analysis of 171 HCI research articles, a number of themes are identified in the literature and, it is argued, construct a dominant perspective of materiality, the self, and interaction. • Anxiety in Translation: Naming Existentialism before Sartre.Edward Baring - 2015 - History of European Ideas 41 (4):470-488.
SummaryThis article examines the international debate over the most appropriate name for what became known as ‘existentialism’. It starts by detailing the diverse strands of the Kierkegaard reception in Germany in the early inter-war period, which were given a variety of labels—Existentialismus, Existenzphilosophie, Existentialphilosophie and existentielle Philosophie—and shows how, as these words were translated into other languages, the differences between them were effaced. This process helps explain how over the 1930s a remarkably heterogeneous group of thinkers came to be included (...)
