  • Performance anxiety and the plasticity of emotional responses.Karen Chow & Eduardo Mercado - 2020 - Cognition and Emotion 34 (7):1309-1325.
Current psychological theories of performance anxiety focus heavily on relating performers’ physiological and mental states to their abilities to maintain focus and execute learned skills. How task-specific expertise and past experiences moderate the degree to which individuals become anxious in a given performance context are not well accounted for within these theories. This review considers how individual differences arising from learning may shape the psychobiological, emotional, and cognitive processes that modulate anxious states associated with the performance of highly trained skills. • Age moderates associations between dementia worry and subjective cognition.David M. Spalding, Rebecca Hart, Robyn Henderson & Louise A. Brown Nicholls - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
The present study assessed whether dementia worry is associated with adults’ subjective cognitive difficulties, and whether any associations are moderated by age. Participants were 477 adults aged 18–90 years. They completed standard, subjective measures of dementia worry and everyday cognitive difficulties (i.e. attention, language, verbal and visual-spatial memory, and visual-perceptual ability). Moderated regression analyses included dementia worry as a predictor of specific cognitive difficulties, and age as a moderator. Covariates included gender, trait cognitive and somatic anxiety, general aging-related anxiety, depression, (...)

  • Acute Stress Shapes Creative Cognition in Trait Anxiety.Haijun Duan, Xuewei Wang, Zijuan Wang, Wenlong Xue, Yuecui Kan, Weiping Hu & Fengqing Zhang - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10.
This study examined the cognitive mechanism underlying acute stress in creative cognition among individuals with high and low trait anxiety. Specifically, cognitive inhibition was assessed using the flanker task during acute stress. Fifty-two participants (26 high trait anxiety, 26 low trait anxiety) (mean age = 18.94 years) underwent stress induction via the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). They all completed the Alternative Uses Test (AUT) and the Remote Associates Test (RAT) before and after the TSST. Biochemical markers (salivary cortisol and (...)
