  1. Beyond empathy: clinical intimacy in nursing practice.Timothy W. Kirk - 2007 - Nursing Philosophy 8 (4):233-243.
Understanding, shared meaning, and mutual trust lie at the heart of the therapeutic nurse–patient relationship. This article introduces the concept of clinical intimacy by applying the interpersonal process model of intimacy to the nurse–patient relationship. The distinction between complementary and reciprocal behaviours, and between intimate interactions and intimate relationships, addresses background concerns about the appropriateness of intimacy in nursing relationships. The mutual construction of meaning in the interactive process between nurses and patients is seen to lie at the heart of (...)

  • Social acceleration, alienation, and resonance: Hartmut Rosa's writings applied to nursing.Camelia López-Deflory, Amélie Perron & Margalida Miró-Bonet - 2023 - Nursing Inquiry 30 (2):e12528.
This article aims to present the life and work of German thinker Hartmut Rosa as a philosopher of interest for nursing. Nursing knowledge development and application are influenced by numerous factors within the context of science and practice. The prevailing culture of science along with an evolving context of increasingly technological environments and rationalization within health care impacts both the generation of nursing knowledge and the practice of nursing. The effects of the culture of science and the context of nursing practice may negatively impact the structure and application of nursing knowledge, how nurses practice, and how nurses understand the patients and (...)

  • The emotion of compassion and the likelihood of its expression in nursing practice.Roger Alan Newham - 2017 - Nursing Philosophy 18 (3):e12163.
Philosophical and empirical work on the nature of the emotions is extensive, and there are many theories of emotions. However, all agree that emotions are not knee jerk reactions to stimuli and are open to rational assessment or warrant. This paper's focus is on the condition or conditions for compassion as an emotion and the likelihood that it or they can be met in nursing practice. Thus, it is attempting to keep, as far as possible, compassion as an emotion separate (...)
