За багато років, що минули з того часу, як Джон Ролз видав свою працю «Теорія справедли- вості», в академічних колах сформувалося і набуло великого поширення ставлення до Ролзової теорії як до нового етапу розвитку локівсько-кантівської ліберальної традиції. Однак після того, як нещодавно було відкрито для дослідників папери Ролза в Архіві Гар вард- ського університету, стало зрозуміло, що усталене уявлення є не зовсім точним. Вивчення ранніх праць Ролза, значна частина яких залишається неопублікованими, дало змогу об’єм- ніше побачити етапи та особливості формування (...) його теорії й загалом по-новому подиви- тися на історію розвитку політичної філософії в ХХ столітті. В центрі уваги цієї статті праці Ролза, написані в 1940-х — першій половині 1950-х років, до поїздки Ролза в Окс форд, коли завершується його «вітґенштайніанський поворот», а от же, їх виправ- дано можна розглядати як окремий етап розвитку його думки. Тому вони становлять неабиякий інтерес для дослідження. Ана ліз ранніх праць Ролза дав змогу побачити, що ба зові концепти Ролзової теорії справедливості починають формуватися ще до його поїздки в Оксфорд. В цих працях Ролз ще не звертається власне до теми справедливості, про те в них закладаються основи для концептів «добре впорядковане суспільство», «вихідна позиція», то го тлумачення обставин справедливості, що ми його знаходимо в «Теорії справедливості». І хо ча після війни Ролз відмовляється від релігії, наслідком чого став пошук ним базових етичних принципів справедливої кооперації, які можна обґрунтувати раціонально, у своїх подальших працях він зберігає загальну орієнтацію на соціальний ідеал, уявлення про який він формує у 1940-ві роки в межах традиції неоортодоксальної протестантської теології. ABSTRACT This essay challenges the view that John Rawls's recently published undergraduate thesis A Brief Inquiry into the Meaning of Sin and Faith provides little help in understanding his mature work. Two crucial strands of Rawls's Theory of Justice are its critique of teleology and its claims about our moral nature and its expression. These strands are brought together in a set of arguments late in Theory which are important but have attracted little sustained attention. I argue that the target (...) of Rawls's undergraduate thesis is a form of Christianity which rests on assumptions Rawls later came to think were fundamental to teleological views, and that the thesis defends an alternative form of religiosity that anticipates what Rawls says in Theory about the expression of our nature. Those sections of Theory also provide resources Rawls could have used to respond to a number of prominent and recurrent criticisms of his account of moral motivation. Seeing the continuities between Brief Inquiry and Theory of Justice shows how long Rawls wrestled with problems he took up in the neglected sections of Theory and thereby shows their importance to Rawls's thought. Why is someone enduringly prized as a philosopher? To answer this question, this historical case study examines the intersecting careers of John Rawls and R. M. Hare. It looks at their writings, a complex chain of disagreements, the argumentative dimension. The essay moreover explores the clash of differing temperaments. Finally, themes in addition to ratiocination and personality are factored in: the leanings of the institutions that control access to intellectual endeavor; the public square—politics widely conceived—into which the two men were (...) thrown; and the cultural rivalry between England and America after World War Two. justice as fairness envisions a society of free citizens holding equal basic rights cooperating within an egalitarian economic system. His account of political liberalism addresses the legitimate use of political power in a democracy, aiming to show how enduring unity may be achieved despite the diversity of worldviews that free institutions allow. His writings on the law of peoples extend these theories to liberal foreign policy, with the goal of imagining how a peaceful and tolerant international order might be possible.

Contemporary debates about ideal and nonideal theory rest on an underlying consensus that the primary practical task of political theory is directing action. This overlooks other urgent practical work that theory can do, including showing how injustice can be made bearable and how resisting it can be meaningful. I illustrate this important possibility by revisiting the purpose for which John Rawls originally developed the concept of ideal theory: reconciling a democratic public to living in a flawed world that may otherwise (...) seem more of a home for catastrophe than justice. However, Rawls’s account of reconciliation is flawed; because of his methodology, the realistic utopia he constructs as a source of hope can be used to defend an unjust status quo. By drawing lessons from Theodor Adorno’s contrasting view of reconciliation after the Holocaust, I offer a more democratic method for political theory to offer sources of hope to the public. (shrink)
