  1. The Aristotelian Context of the Existence-Essence Distinction in De Ente Et Essentia.Angus Brook - 2019 - Metaphysica 20 (2):151-173.
This paper explores the Aristotelian context of the real distinction between existence and essence thought to be posited in Thomas Aquinas’ early workDe Ente Et Essentia. In doing so, the paper situates its own position in the context of contemporary scholarship and in relation to the contemporary trend to downplay Aristotle’s influence in Thomas Aquinas’ philosophy. The paper argues that re-readingDe Ente Et Essentiain this way sheds new light on some of the crucial debates in contemporary Thomist scholarship, particularly with (...)

  • Rationality and Human Fulfilment Clarified by a Thomistic Metaphysics of Participation.Andrew Mullins - 2022 - Scientia et Fides 10 (1):177-195.
A Thomistic metaphysics of participation in being offers an account of rationality that is more complete and coherent than that of nonreductive physicalism. It is a reasoned understanding of how an embodied intellectual subject shares in being and intellectual life. This metaphysical framework supports an understanding of rationality as a participated power, and an essential property of human nature empowering persons to know reality and make choices accordingly. Human fulfilment in truth and love is a consequence of the grounding of (...)

  • A Thomistic metaphysics of creation.Gaven Kerr - 2012 - Religious Studies 48 (3):337-356.
This article seeks to advance a Thomistic metaphysics of creation in light of certain claims made by Stephen Hawking on the beginninglessness of the universe. I start with an exploration of Hawking's proposal that a beginningless universe entails an uncreated universe. This propels me into Aquinas's contention that a created beginningless universe is indeed possible, and thence I consider the metaphysics behind Thomas's position in this regard. Given this metaphysics of creation, I contend that there follow some interesting conclusions with (...)

In the present paper, some issues related to the causal becoming of created beings -in particular, spiritual beings- will be examined, on the basis of the metaphysical notion of participation developed by Thomas Aquinas.
