  1. Communicative Power(lessness). Democratic Ethics and the Role of Social Psychoanalysis for Melioristic Social Science.Cedric Braun - 2023 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 15 (2):80-97.
This article aims to combine the strengths of Erich Fromm’s and John Dewey’s social philosophies. I argue that the merits of this comparison become particularly clear when the theories are outlined and compared in the following three steps. First, a social theoretical common ground of Dewey and Fromm will be illustrated. Their “World War genealogies” share the same defense mechanism as the major explanation of the Germans’ tendency to voluntary submission, which involves a strong feeling of powerlessness. Against this background, (...)

  • How to evaluate the quality of an ethical deliberation? A pragmatist proposal for evaluation criteria and collaborative research.Abdou Simon Senghor & Eric Racine - 2022 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 25 (3):309-326.
Ethics designates a structured process by which important human values and meanings of life are understood and tackled. Therein, the ability to discuss openly and reflect on (aka deliberation) understandings of moral problems, on solutions to these problems, and to explore what a meaningful resolution could amount to is highly valued. However, the indicators of what constitutes a high-quality ethical deliberation remain vague and unclear. This article proposes and develops a pragmatist approach to evaluate the quality of deliberation. Deliberation features (...)

  • What Does China Mean for Pragmatism?Roberto Gronda - 2015 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 7 (2).
This paper aims to investigate the transformations undergone by Dewey’s philosophy in the period from 1916 to 1921. By analyzing three different problematic situations with which Dewey found himself confronted (German militarism; the effects of propaganda on American society; the experience of a two-year stay in China), the paper seeks to show the various lines of development at work in his thought. The thesis of the paper is that in the war and immediately post-war years Dewey was concerned with outlining (...)

In the last fifteen years, John Dewey’s early philosophy received considerable attention. John Shook’s Dewey’s Empirical Theory of Knowledge and Reality, Jim Good’s The Search for “Unity in Diversity”: the “Permanent Deposit” of Hegel in John Dewey’s Philosophy, Donald Morse’s Faith in Life: John Dewey’s Early Philosophy, on the top of many articles, critical editions, and reviews: all these texts have contributed to a better understanding of many important aspects of Dewey’s early thought. • Vulnerabilität als Problem.Danilo Gajic - 2023 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 15 (2).
