  • In the Ruins of Babel: Pitfalls on the Way toward a Universal Language for Research Ethics and Benefit Sharing.Jan Helge Solbakk - 2011 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 20 (3):341-355.
At the end of a paper on international research ethics published in the July-August 2010 issue of the Hastings Center Report, London and Zollman argue the need for grounding our duties in international medical and health-related research within a broader normative framework of social, distributive, and rectificatory justice. The same goes for Thomas Pogge, who, in a whole range of publications during the past years, has argued for a human-rights-based approach to international research. In a thought-provoking paper in the June (...)

The paper introduces a methodological proposal to teach bioethics relying on the lifelong education model called pedagogy of problematization. The general methodology and its main sources at the global and the Latin American level are presented. It describes the basic educative model, its goals and its differences with the Problem Based Learning model. The requirements necessary to implement this methodology in relation to a broad approach of bioethics including social, environmental and global bioethics and not only biomedical ethics are presented. Jones, Liliana Foca, Ben Raikes, Johanna Schiratzki, Mirjam Urban & Sara Ullman - 2016 - Ethics and Behavior 26 (7):586-606.
Although international research is increasing in volume and importance, there remains a dearth of knowledge on similarities and differences in “national human research ethics”, that is, national ethical guidelines, Institutional Review Boards, and research stakeholder’ ethical attitudes and behaviors. We begin to address this situation by reporting upon our experiences in conducting a multinational study into the mental health of children who had a parent/carer in prison. The study was conducted in 4 countries: Germany, Great Britain, Romania, and Sweden. Data (...)

  • Abuses and Apologies: Irresponsible Conduct of Human Subjects Research in Latin America.Julie M. Aultman - 2013 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 41 (1):353-368.
As much as we can be squeamish and angry over what was being done in these studies, they force us to consider how we tell these stories and the policy we make now, as so much of our research is global and the risks and benefits of experimentation always in need of recalibration.Susan M. ReverbyA growing distrust exists among Latin American populations as past abuses in medical research have rightly been publicized, and as researchers continue to intentionally and unintentionally circumvent (...)
