  1. On the march or on the margins? Affirmations and erasures of feminist activism in the UK.Jonathan Dean - 2012 - European Journal of Women's Studies 19 (3):315-329.
In the UK, many have argued that the past five years or so have seen an increase in the radicalism and visibility of feminist activism, jarring somewhat with the strong emphasis on loss in much recent scholarship – as well as media commentary – on feminist politics. Against this backdrop, this article asks how, and to what extent, this resurgence of feminist activism has unsettled the centrality of loss within the affective economies of contemporary British feminism, by examining a range (...)

  • Feminist Purism and the Question of |[lsquo]|Radicality|[rsquo]| in Contemporary Political Theory.Jonathan Dean - 2008 - Contemporary Political Theory 7 (3):280.
This paper operates on the premise that a systematic formulation of ‘radicality’ is a worthwhile and potentially productive exercise within political theory. However, I argue that one continues to find a latent ‘purism’ within contemporary understandings of ‘radicality’, primarily in relation to feminism, but also elsewhere. This manifests itself in the tendency to think ‘radicality’ as a function of the inherent properties of particular types of political spaces and political practices. Within feminism, for example, I argue that the ‘radicality’ of (...)

  • Recognition Struggles in Trans‐national Arenas: Negotiating Identities and Framing Citizenship.Barbara Hobson, Marcus Carson & Rebecca Lawrence - 2007 - Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy 10 (4):443-470.
The purpose of this article is to incorporate trans?national actors and institutions into citizenship theory both theoretically and empirically. We analyze three cases of recognition movements promoting gender, ethnic/minority and indigenous rights. Using one societal context, Sweden, we map the processes and mechanisms of power and agency (boundary?making and brokering) that shape how trans?national institutions and actors offer new forms of leverage politics to recognition movements as well as constrain their agency. These mechanisms of power are formalized in a model (...)

  • A Movement Moves... Is There a Women's Movement in England Today?Kate Nash - 2002 - European Journal of Women's Studies 9 (3):311-328.
There is a diversity of views among feminists who have been debating whether or not a women's movement exists in Britain today. In part this is due to the lack of a clear working definition of social movement. This article uses social movement theory to discuss the ambiguous signs that are taken to indicate either the movement's continuing existence or its disappearance: the growth of mainstream political organizations; a focus on `women' in cultural production; the `micro-politics' of everyday life. The (...)
