Late antique political Platonism was not unoriginal in its thought. The paper takes as an example the Justinianic dialogue On Political Science (ca. 550), which creatively engages with Plato’s political works. It shows that the dialogue tries – and manages, as I argue – to combine two apparently inconsistent Platonic models: what I call the “divine” model, in which a philosopher-king endowed with divine knowledge rules unhindered by civic laws; and the “human” model, characterized by the rule of law. The (...) divine model comes mostly from Plato’s Republic and Statesman; the human one, from the Laws. On Political Science demonstrates that its (anonymous) author was acquainted with these three Platonic texts, in addition to other texts. That is philologically noteworthy, but also philosophically interesting: the dialogue manages to integrate the two models into a common framework. It puts forward an original political model, in which a philosopher-king, although endowed with divine knowledge, still has to be bound by civic laws because of his human frailty. The article concludes by discussing the polemical import the dialogue could have had in its Justinianic context. (shrink)

In this paper I discuss the problem of the meanings of the verb ‘be’ in Plato’s Timaeus. My claim is that, at least in that dialogue, existence emerges as the main and autonomous meaning of the verb ‘be’, contrary to the widespread view first defended in a series of studies by Charles Kahn according to which, in the Greek language and in Plato’s philosophy, the verb ‘be’ basically has a copulative-predicative and, more specifically, a truth-related meaning. I consider and examine (...) some passages from the Timaeus (27d5–28a4, 29b3–c3, 37e3–38b3, 51b7–52a7) where the concept of existence seems to be expressed in a clear and definite way by the use of the verb ‘be.’ I conclude by making some remarks on how we should understand the notion of existence, not least with reference to the problem of truth, within Plato’s philosophy and the Timaeus in particular. This paper approaches the Critias straightforwardly as a work of political philosophy but gives greater attention to Athens’ opponent, Atlantis, whose founding, political organization, and eventual decline each offer important lessons about the aims of legislation and political life. I begin by comparing the foundation of the two cities as presented in Critias’ myth, with a special focus on the role of divine persuasion (I). I then describe the political organization of Athens and Atlantis, showing how they reflect the different (...) ways in which their founding gods exercised divine persuasion (II). Next, I focus on the decline of Atlantis and the causes behind it (III). Finally (IV), I discuss the lessons that I think can be gathered from the foregoing sections and show how the themes that emerge from the comparison of the two cities anticipate their more extensive exploration in the Laws. Contre l’interprétation traditionnelle, selon laquelle la question posée par l’Étranger d’Élée en Politique, 300 c 5-7 constitue un argument en faveur des lois existantes, non idéales, je montre dans cet article que l’Étranger se réfère ici à un ensemble idéal de lois, tauta renvoyant à ce qui suit – à savoir, ta para tôn eidotôn eis dunamin einai gegrammena . Une telle lecture aura pour conséquence de changer notre conception du développement de la pensée politique de Platon. Car 300 c (...) est le passage qui, combiné à certains autres dans les Lois, semble offrir à nombre de commentateurs une preuve très claire du fait que Platon en soit venu à changer d’avis, même au sujet de la démocratie : en effet, celle-ci n’est plus, comme dans LaRépublique, un degré au-dessus de la tyrannie, l’ultime maladie de la cité, mais se fonde sur des « imitations de la vérité ». Bien loin de réhabiliter la démocratie , le Politique maintient et insiste sur l’indispensabilité, pour un bon gouvernement, de la connaissance, qu’il déclare catégoriquement impossible à trouver parmi un grand nombre d’individus, quels qu’ils soient.Against the traditional view, which holds that the Eleatic Visitor’s question in Politicus, 300 c 5-7 proposes an endorsement of existing, non-ideal laws, I argue in this paper that the E. V. is actually referring here to an ideal set of laws, tauta referring forward to ta para tôn eidotôn eis dunamin einai gegrammena. This reading would fundamentally alter our view of the development of Plato’s political thought. For 300 c is the passage that – when combined with certain parts of the Laws – has seemed to many to offer clear proof that Plato came to change his mind even about democracy : not any longer, as in TheRepublic, just one step up from tyranny, the « terminal disease » of the city, but even based on « imitations of the truth ». Far from rehabilitating democracy , the Politicus – so the paper argues – continues to insist on the indispensability, for good government, of expert knowledge, which it roundly declares is not to be found among any significant number of people.
