  1. Partial readings: addressing a Renaissance archive.Stephen J. Milner - 1999 - History of the Human Sciences 12 (2):89-105.
By considering a variety of readings of Renaissance Florence from Burckhardt to the present, this article discusses the nature of the interrelation between the archive and the historian, with a view to illustrating the partiality of both. The records contained within the archives are by nature fragmentary; vestiges of the past, they are also partial in the sense of being subjective, testimonies to past relationships either between individuals or between individuals and institutions - social or political. Likewise, the readings of (...)

  • Agnes Heller's Ecce Homo: A Neomodern Vision of Moral Anthropology.Marios Constantinou - 1999 - Thesis Eleven 59 (1):29-52.
By dovetailing the classical concepts of virtue, beauty, harmony and happiness with the cardinal values of modern imagination, life and freedom, Agnes Heller galvanizes modernity's anthropological reflexivity and hints at the prospect of a classicism pertinent to the present. Beyond nostalgia for an ancient past or apology for a contemporary present, her moral anthropology is approached via a dialectical elucidation of aspects of epicurean theory attuned to modernity's complexity. Under the contemporary condition of waning postmodern challenges, escalating confusion and cynicism, (...)

  • European Thinking and the Study of World Art from a Natural Perspective.Ancuta Mortu - 2018 - Espes 7 (2):43-50.
My aim in this paper is to address some difficulties related to the development of an emerging research program called world art studies. While it originates as a European discipline in the German scholarly tradition around 1900, this program comes to the fore only recently, with recent advances in natural and cognitive sciences which hold promise for providing more inclusive categories that could serve the study of art as a worldwide phenomenon. I focus more specifically on the strengths and weaknesses (...)

  • Mudanças Culturais, Mudanças Religiosas: Perfis E Tendências da Religiosidade Em Portugal Numa Perspetiva Comparada.Eduardo Duque - 2014 - Humus.

  • Dilthey, Empathy and Verstehen A Contemporary Reappraisal.Austin Harrington - 2001 - European Journal of Social Theory 4 (3):311-329.
Wilhelm Dilthey's late nineteenth-century doctrine of `re-experiencing' the thoughts and feelings of the actors whose lives the social scientist seeks to understand has been criticized by several commentators as entailing a `naïve empathy view of understanding' in which social scientists are said to transport themselves into other cultural contexts in a wholly uncritical, unreflective manner. This article challenges such criticisms by arguing that Dilthey's writings on hermeneutics amount to a highly sophisticated defence of the role of psychological feeling in understanding (...)

  • Darwin's evolutionary philosophy: The laws of change.Edward S. Reed - 1978 - Acta Biotheoretica 27 (3-4):201-235.
The philosophical or metaphysical architecture of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection is analyzed and diflussed. It is argued that natural selection was for Darwin a paradigmatic case of a natural law of change — an exemplar of what Ghiselin (1969) has called selective retention laws. These selective retention laws lie at the basis of Darwin's revolutionary world view. In this essay special attention is paid to the consequences for Darwin's concept of species of his selective retention laws. Although (...)

  • Wayfinding: Notes on the ‘Public’ as Interactive.Patrick Maynard - 2015 - Review of Philosophy and Psychology 6 (1):27-48.
“Public” is here treated by its three extensions: most broadly, from the merely extrasomatic, where users of representations are initially distinguished from makers, through ‘published’ or for the general public, to the governmental, official—where the discussion begins, before turning in its second half to the more common, middle meaning. What is public in these ways, “spatial representation”, also has the different meanings of representation of space or representation by spatial means, and there are several kinds of space to be considered. (...)

  • Descriptive Accuracy in History: The Case of Narrative Explanations.Leonidas Tsilipakos - 2020 - Philosophy of the Social Sciences 50 (4):283-312.
This article discusses the issue of the conceptual accuracy of descriptions of social life, which, although fundamental for the social sciences, has in fact been neglected. I approach this task via an examination of Paul Roth’s recent work, which recapitulates reflection in analytic philosophy of history and sets out a view of the past as indeterminate until retrospectively constructed in historical narratives. I argue that Roth’s position embraces an overly restricted notion of historical significance and underestimates how anachronistic descriptions vitiate (...)
