  1. Stakeholder Engagement, Knowledge Problems and Ethical Challenges.J. Robert Mitchell, Ronald K. Mitchell, Richard A. Hunt, David M. Townsend & Jae H. Lee - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 175 (1):75-94.
In the management and business ethics literatures, stakeholder engagement has been demonstrated to lead to more ethical management practices. However, there may be limits on the extent to which stakeholder engagement can, as currently conceptualized, resolve some of the more difficult ethical challenges faced by managers. In this paper we argue that stakeholder engagement, when seen as a way of reducing five types of knowledge problems—risk, ambiguity, complexity, equivocality, and a priori irreducible uncertainty—can aid managers in resolving such ethical challenges. (...)

  • The Potential Use of Sociological Perspectives for Business Ethics Teaching.Johannes Brinkmann - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 156 (1):273-287.
This paper investigates the potential contribution of sociological perspectives for business ethics teaching. After a brief and selective literature review, the paper suggests starting with sociological thinking and three aspects of it: sociological concepts, sociological imagination, and postponed judgment. After presenting two short case teaching stories and three sociological concepts or frameworks, the potential inspiration value of a sociological checklist for analysing or diagnosing business ethics cases is tried out. As an open ending, some short final suggestions are made for (...)

  • CSR Beyond Economy and Society: A Post-capitalist Approach.Steffen Roth, Vladislav Valentinov, Markus Heidingsfelder & Miguel Pérez-Valls - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 165 (3):411-423.
In this article, we draw on established views of CSR dysfunctionalities to show how and why CSR is regularly observed to be both shaped by and supportive of capitalism. We proceed to show that these dysfunctionalities are maintained by both the pro- and anticapitalist approaches to CSR, both of which imply an ill-defined separation of the economy and society as well an overly strong problem or solution focus on political and economic issues. Finally, we present a post-capitalist approach to CSR (...)

  • The Ethics of Functional Differentiation: Reclaiming Morality in Niklas Luhmann’s Social Systems Theory.Vladislav Valentinov - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 155 (1):105-114.
Niklas Luhmann held a skeptical view of the role of morality in the modern society. The present paper reassesses this skepticism in view of his early work showing the regime of functional differentiation to be supported by fundamental human rights. Building on this argument, the paper advocates a more positive view of morality which is shown to be related to the sustainability of social systems in their encompassing societal and natural environment. This view is warranted by the overarching Luhmannian theme (...)

  • The Ethnographic Method in CSR Research: The Role and Importance of Methodological Fit.Ivana Milosevic & A. Erin Bass - 2018 - Business and Society 57 (1):174-215.
Corporate social responsibility research has burgeoned in the past several decades. Despite significant advances, our review of the literature reveals a problematic gap: We know little about how culture, practices, and interactions shape CSR. On further investigation, we discover that limited research utilizes ethnography to understand CSR, which may provide some explanation for this gap. Thus, the purpose of this article is to illustrate the utility of ethnography for advancing business and society research via a multistage framework that demonstrates how (...)
