  1. These Degrees go to Eleven: Fuzzy Logics and Gradable Predicates.Petr Cintula, Berta Grimau, Carles Noguera & Nicholas J. J. Smith - 2022 - Synthese 200 (445):1-38.
In the literature on vagueness one finds two very different kinds of degree theory. The dominant kind of account of gradable adjectives in formal semantics and linguistics is built on an underlying framework involving bivalence and classical logic: its degrees are not degrees of truth. On the other hand, fuzzy logic based theories of vagueness—largely absent from the formal semantics literature but playing a significant role in both the philosophical literature on vagueness and in the contemporary logic literature—are logically nonclassical (...)

  • Assessing the modality particles of the yi group in fuzzy possible-worlds semantics.Matthias Gerner - 2009 - Linguistics and Philosophy 32 (2):143-184.
Of late, evidentiality has received great attention in formal semantics. In this paper I develop ‘evidentiality-informed’ truth conditions for modal operators such as must and may . With language data drawn from Luoping Nase (a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in the P.R. of China and belonging to the Yi Nationality), I illustrate that epistemic modals clash with clauses articulating first-hand information. I then demonstrate that existing models such as Kratzer’s graded possible-worlds semantics fail to provide accurate truth conditions for modals tagging (...)

  • Commodious axiomatization of quantifiers in multiple-valued logic.Reiner Hähnle - 1998 - Studia Logica 61 (1):101-121.
We provide tools for a concise axiomatization of a broad class of quantifiers in many-valued logic, so-called distribution quantifiers. Although sound and complete axiomatizations for such quantifiers exist, their size renders them virtually useless for practical purposes. We show that for quantifiers based on finite distributive lattices compact axiomatizations can be obtained schematically. This is achieved by providing a link between skolemized signed formulas and filters/ideals in Boolean set lattices. Then lattice theoretic tools such as Birkhoff's representation theorem for finite (...)

  • Consequence and Interpolation in Łukasiewicz Logic.Daniele Mundici - 2011 - Studia Logica 99 (1-3):269-278.
Building on Wójcicki’s work on infinite-valued Łukasiewicz logic Ł ∞ , we give a self-contained proof of the deductive interpolation theorem for Ł ∞ . This paper aims at introducing the reader to the geometry of Łukasiewicz logic.
