    Conceptualism—the view that universals are mental entities without an external, independent, or substantial reality—has enjoyed popularity at various points throughout the history of philosophy. While Plato’s Theory of Forms is not a conceptualist theory of universals, we find at Parmenides 132b–c the startling conceptualist suggestion from a young Socrates that each Form might be a noēma, or a mental entity.     In this paper I focus on Proclus’ concept of the instrumental cause in his commentary on the Timaeus (In Tim.). Here, we investigate the formal structure of kind representations—the structure that distinguishes kind representations from other types of representations. The present studies confirm that participants distinguish generic‐supporting properties of individuals (e.g., this watch is made of steel) and accidental properties (e.g., this watch is on the nightstand). The objects of physical science are therefore here ‘separate’, or ‘independently existent’.     This paper discusses the role of innate concepts derived from Intellect in Plotinus’ account of cognition of the sensible realm.
