    The medieval version of the problem of universals centres around propositions such as ?man is a species? and ?animalis a genus?. One of C. Lejewski's analyses of such propositions shows the semantic status of their terms by means of Ajdukiewicz-style categorical indices having participial or infinitive forms as their natural-language counterparts. Some medievals certainly used such forms in their corresponding analyses, thus avoiding the alleged referential demands generated by nominally-termed propositions.     The paper explores the existential import of universal affirmative in Descartes, Arnauld and Malebranche. Descartes holds, inconsistently, that eternal truths are true even if the subject term is empty but that a proposition with a false idea as subject is false. Malebranche extends Descartes? truth-conditions for eternal truths, which lack existential import, to all knowledge, allowing only for non-propositional knowledge of contingent existence.   • Malebranche’s Neoplatonic Semantic Theory.John N. Martin - 2014 - International Journal of the Platonic Tradition 8 (1):33-71.
    This paper argues that Malebranche’s semantics sheds light on his metaphysics and epistemology, and is of interest in its own right. By recasting issues linguistically, it shows that Malebranche assumes a Neoplatonic semantic structure within Descartes’ dualism and Augustine’s theory of illumination, and employs linguistic devices from the Neoplatonic tradition.     Blasius Pelacani’s two questions on the paradoxes of implication in his commentary on the Tractatus of Peter of Spain aptly introduce to a substantial discussion of the notion of logical implication in medieval authors such as Abelard, Ockham, Scotus, and Blasius himself. Methodological assumptions on the history of logic in general are also analysed.
