We are inquiring [into] what virtue is, not in order just to know it, but in order to become good.It seems, reading them [Heidegger and Wittgenstein], . . . that some moral claim upon us is levied by the act of philosophizing itself, a claim that no separate subject of ethics would serve to study. . . . [W]hat needs attention from philosophy, is our life as a whole. What I propose, therefore, is very simple: it is nothing more than to (...)

  • (1 other version)Resituating narrative and story in business ethics.Kenneth Mølbjerg Jørgensen & David M. Boje - 2010 - Business Ethics: A European Review 19 (3):253-264.
In this article, we resituate a long-standing duality of (Western) narrative tradition over living story emergence and more linear narrative. Narrative, with its focus on linear beginning, middle and end coherence, retrospection and monologic, is too easily appropriated into managerialist projects. We focus on the web of living stories as a Derridian deconstructive move, which allows us to say something important about their relation to narrative and to develop a storytelling ethics. Our thesis is that resituating the relationship between narrative (...)

  • The Differend of Justice: Violence and Redemption in Dworkin's Justice for Hedgehogs.Charles Olney - 2019 - Journal of the American Philosophical Association 5 (2):158-173.
This article uses Ronald Dworkin's argument for the unity of value to explore the redemptive core of modern legal order. Dworkin establishes a formal unity: all legal claims reside within a linked framework of moral justification. However, Jean-Francois Lyotard's concept of the differend exposes a lingering gap. Arguments within a moral universe do inevitably converge, but such unity is only possible due to the formative violence enactedbysuch orders. Dworkin hopes to provide the definitive statement against moral subjectivity, but in its (...)
